Dream Big!
|
When I was 15 years old I didn't know any famous female soccer players and I was an average player on a decent soccer team.
But when I was 25 years old I idolized Mia Hamm and got a try-out for our Women's National Team. I never made the '99 Women's World Cup Team but I still have a lot to show from the experience.
For example, on display at work is a prized possession of this self-professed feminist: a Mia Hamm inspired Soccer Barbie from 1999. My boss at the time of my year-long try-out (yes we called them try-outs back then) bought it for me on a trip to the US. I couldn't bear to take her out of the box then and I still can't today. Every four years she gets a closer look as I think about how much has changed as we gear up to watch the 2015 Women's World Cup.
24 teams will now play for the trophy instead of 16. 29 million girls and women play the sport world-wide. The event will be televised for all to see.
The moment is here....exhibition games are coming, we know Canada's team and this time when I dream about the Women's World Cup, I still dream about being at the game but my seat has changed a little.
