Concussions in Youth Sport |
Concussions are a serious health concern in youth sports. Lower Island Soccer Association is committed to the safety of our players and to educate our players, parents, coaches and referees in the dangers of concussion-related injuries.
The Facts:
- A concussion is a brain injury
- All concussions are serious
- Concussions can occur without a loss in consciousness
- Concussions can occur in any sport
- Recognition and proper management of concussions when they first occur can help prevent further injury or even death
What a coach should do when a concussion is suspected:
- Remove athlete from play
- Ensure athlete is evaluated by an appropriate health care professional. Do not try to judge the seriousness of the injury yourself
- Inform athlete's parents or guardians about the known or possible concussion and give them the fact sheet on concussions
- Allow the athlete to return to play only with the permission from an appropriate health care professional

Coaching Qualifications for 2014
|
For 2014, the minimum coaching education standard for coaching a team in the Costal Cup and Provincial Cup (Both A & B Cup) will be "Soccer for Life".
It is MANDATORY for each Head Coach to have completed either the new "Soccer for Life" course, or to have a B-Licence qualification, such as "B-Pretest", in order to participate in these cups in March and April 2014. If these requirments are not met, their team will not be eligibile to play, there will be no "exemptions" available.
Over the past 18 months, Lower Island Soccer Association has been offering these courses across the district free of charge to all LISA coaches. Along with the support of its member clubs, LISA has mandated that all district coaches will be certified to coach by the summer of 2015. If you have not yet attended a coaching coach then please take advantage of the courses that have been scheduled in the New Year around the district.
For a list of all courses offered in the New Year, please click here.

If you think Futsal is just indoor Soccer, you're wrong! |

BC Soccer is offering a FREE Futsal Tournament
When: January 4th and 5th, 2014 Where: The University of Fraser Valley, Abbotsford Open to: Girls & Boys - U9 (2005 born) and U10 (2004 born). Entry Fee: FREE!
For further information or to register please visit the BC Soccer website
What is Futsal you ask?
Futsal's essential elements consist of five players a side on basketball-sized courts, indoor and outdoor surfaces without the use of sidewalls, and a no-bounce ball. The sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing. The no-bounce ball requires players to propel the ball using skill and the proper technique, rather than rely on the bounce of the ball.
Here are some of the differences between outdoor Soccer and Futsal, for more details please click here

What to know as a parent assistant referee
|
So you've volunteered to run the line for your daughter or son's game because no one else will do it, here is some advice.
DO:
1. Before the game starts, ask the referee if they want you to call offsides.
2. If the ball snakes in an out of play, put your flag straight up until the referee acknowledges you and then signal the direction. Remember the ball is only out if the entire ball is over the line.
3. Remain neutral in your decision making.
DON'T
1. Don't under any circumstances engage with the spectators, players or team officials whether positive or negative, directed at you or someone else. If you need support speak to the referee. 2. Don't take it personally if the referee overturns or disagrees with your signal. 3. Don't coach or instruct players while performing this role.
ASSIST THE REFEREE BUT NEVER INSIST

Reminder:
Games during winter break |
While LISA does not continue scheduling league games on a weekly basis during the four-week winter break this does not mean our season has been closed.
There are fields, such as artificial turf pitches, that are available.
In order to make up any outstanding league game the two teams must agree upon the re-scheduling and arrange for a field and referee through one or both of their clubs or make their own arrangements for a field and referee.
Teams are expected to make up their outstanding league games during the winter break. |
|
The Correct Call
| A: No, the ball has to touch another player before kicker can score a goal. | |
