6 Magic Words

When it comes to saying the right thing to your child athlete, research points to 6 magic words for parents to say:

"I love to watch you play."

More than anything else, college and professional athletes stated that these six words were the best words a parents could say to them to make them feel great and amplify their joy during and after a game (as a child, and even as an adult).

Here are some "do"s and "don't"s for parents:
DO
DON'T
- Cheer on everyone, not just your child
- Overemphasize sport at the expense of sportsmanship
- Model appropriate behaviour
- Have different goals than your child
- Know what is suitable to discuss with the coach
- Treat your child differently after a loss than a win
- Know your role
- Undermine the coach
- Be a good listener and a great encourager
- Live your own athletic dream through your child

Extending 8v8 Soccer Through U13
How the Youth Development Review will affect Formats
Sussex County FA has it right...

LISA has proposed that for the 2014/2015 seasons, the U13 age groups involved in intra-club play will continue to play 8v8 soccer and graduate into the 11-a-side game in their U14 year.

Anticipated benefits are as follows:

  • more touches on the ball
  • closer to the action
  • smaller goals = harder to score and fewer blow outs
  • smaller squads = easier to make teams
  • favours the late developers
  • encourages controlled play (big kicks will go out)
  • players experience more meaningful actions

We also propose that for clubs wishing to enter the U13 Provincial Cups, we provide an 11-a-side tournament to declare a rep and then make a rule amendment to allow our representative to pick up players to build their roster up to the required number of players for 11-a-side games.

Field Closures - What should I do?!

You must advise your score recorder, LISA scheduler ([email protected]) and your club schedulers (i.e. field, referee) of any changes to the original schedule.

Who's on your team?

Scott Farquhar
LISA Board Member
Scott Farquhar
Scott is one of LISA's newest board members!

Scott has coached his nine-year-old twin boys' soccer team for the past three years. His 5-year-old daughter will be starting organized soccer this year, and apparently
always wants the ball when she plays with her father and brothers.

Scott also loves tennis, having played on the University of Alberta varsity tennis team while studying law.

Favourite soccer team: Vancouver Whitecaps.

Welcome to the board, Scott!

The Evolution of Soccer

Soccer has seen many changes throughout it's history. Ticket prices, player wages, stadium capacities, laws of the game, and other facets of the soccer over the last 30 years are neatly summarized in

Free Practice Plan

This month's practice plan comes from the FUNdamentals Coaching Certification Course.

 Practice Plan #6

How do I protest?

How do I protest a game?
1. If you are playing a game and you know you want to protest before it starts you must make it clear to the official and other team you are playing this game under protest.  Most people only protest if they lose, then you can follow the steps below.

2. You must have the support of your club and submit your protest in writing signed by the team official, citing the exact rule you are protesting.

3. Your protest must be accompanied by a $250 cheque written to Lower Island Soccer Association.

 4. Both the protest letter and cheque must be received at the LISA Office within 48 hours of the game in order to be accepteed.

Please note: Subjective referees decisions are not protestable.

YOU MAKE THE CALL!
If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues

holding them inside the penalty area, what is the correct call?

THE CORRECT CALL

The referee must award a penalty kick.
