Girls and Women in Sport
| Despite the widely recognized benefits of engaging in sport and physical activity, the female population remains far more sedentary and far less involved in sport leadership than their male counterparts.
There are a number of barriers to participation that propel this phenomenon, so let's focus on what we can do as parents to help turn the tables, courtesy of Canadian Sport for Life (PDF file):
1. Start young - life-long physical activity is heavily influenced by the skills acquired early in life and the amount of exposure to physical activity - both structured and unstructured! 2. Support her - take both active and supportive roles! Be active together; listen to her successes and challenges; provide transportation; attend her sport and physical activity events and provide positive feedback. 3. Make the time - ensure she has time to be active by supporting a healthy balance between work, school, domestic responsibilities, and her sport and physical activity participation. 4. Talk about the benefits - including fun, social networks, skill development, decreased stress, leadership and career opportunities, travel, etc. 5. Don't focus on body size and shape - comments about their bodies are often internalized as reflections on their personalities or self-worth. Instead, celebrate their skill, strength and spirit. 6. Encourage leadership opportunities - promote and support their participation in certification and development courses to become team and/or game officials, as well as volunteer opportunities. 7. Connect with role models - introduce them to female role models (coaches, athletes, officials, and sport and physical activity leaders).

YOU MAKE THE CALL!
| If a player intentionally kicks the ball away after the referee has stopped play, what is the correct call?
|
|
Permits 101
| Do you need to know how permits work?
Youth Team to Youth Team Permits:
- must be same club
- may permit up to 3 players per league game
- no permits for Cup games (i.e. LISA Cup, District Cup, A and B Cup)
- players are limited to play in a higher tier in the same age group or equal/higher tier and older age group
(example: A U13 Silver player may play in U13 Gold, U14 Silver and U14 Gold but not U14 Bronze; a U14 Silver player cannot play U14 Silver on another team)
|
|
The Correct Call
|
The player is cautioned and potentially given a yellow card
