Physical Activity Levels of Soccer and Canadian Youth
|

Soccer Players
Research conducted by LISA Head Coach Andrew Latham last October looked at the amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) players in a U9 soccer tournament get, and the results are in!
Using accelerometers to obtain objective measurements of the players' physical activity levels, Andrew found that approximately 63% of their time playing was considered MVPA. This translates into only 33 minutes (on average, as game lengths slightly varied)! See the full report here (PDF file).
While this is indeed a great way for children to be physically active, it is simply not enough! Experts (PHAC; CSEP; CDC; the list goes on) recommend that children attain at least 60 minutes of MVPA every day.
Next year we plan to research the activity level during practices to see how it compares to a game. To find out more about MVPA and the recommended physical activity guidelines, click here or here.
The Bigger Picture
On a similar note, Active Healthy Kids Canada has recently released the 2013 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, which details a comprehensive assessment of the physical activity of children and youth in Canada.
Seventeen different indicators (e.g. physical activity levels, government strategies and investments, school policy and programming, etc.) have been assigned letter grades based on current data, benchmark standards, trends over time, international comparisons, and the presence of disparities.
The short and long versions of the report card can be find on their website.

Soccer Parenting 101 - Friendly Tips |
Let's face it - always doing the "right" thing as a parent is hard, especially when there seems to be new and improved research published every minute. Here are a few friendly reminders of what the research tells us about "good" soccer parents:
1. It's not all about WINNING!
Overemphasizing winning can trigger feelings of guilt, shame, failure, and embarrassment (and can diminish their performance). Focus on open-ended performance-related questions (e.g. "What went well?" or "What needs to be improved?"), as opposed to competitive-based questions (e.g. "Did you score a goal?"). It's about succeeding, not winning.
2. Autonomy-supportive vs. Controlling
Create limits and boundaries but let your child have freedom within them. Give them options but don't confine them to one. Involve them in decision-making. For example, if you run soccer drills at home, let them decide when and what they practice, don't get upset when mistakes are made, and make it fun! Children from autonomy-supportive families are more self-determined and intrinsically motivated than those from controlling families. Structure and control are not the same.

3. Is your child's schedule busier than yours?
Balancing school, sports, play dates, and other scheduled activities can be a lot for a child; and anyone, for that matter! Over-scheduling can have detrimental effects on a child's development with a variety of psychological consequences (e.g. depression, insomnia) and changes in lifestyle choices (e.g. poor social choices). It is okay to say no to additional activities.

4. Open two-way communication
For all three tips above, open two-way communication with children is a useful tool for parents to employ. This refers to the encouragement of ideas and expressions openly flowing from parents to children as well as from children to parents. Make sure your children feel as if their input is valued in conversations, and being able to read your children will help when choosing the appropriate time and place to speak with them about certain things.

Who's on your team?
|
Ray
Carfantan LISA Board Director
Ray began training in March for the upcoming Tour de Rock in September. This 14-day expedition spans a total of 1000 kilometres, beginning at one end of Vancouver Island and ending at the other. Money raised is allocated to pediatric cancer research and programs for children with a history of cancer.
We are all inspired by Ray's determination and strong will to participate and succeed in this event and we wish him the best of luck in the next few months.

YOU MAKE THE CALL!
|
If a goalkeeper, inside their own penalty area, touches the ball with their hands after it has been deliberately kicked to them by a team-mate, what is the correct call?

Don't forget your sunscreen...and grapes! |
It's that wonderful time of year again when the sun's rays are in full effect, and apparently grape seed extract may help protect you from some of its cancerous effects. Read more here.

The Correct Call
|
FIFA Law 12 states that an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team, taken from the place where the offence occurred (in this case, the offence occurred where the goalkeeper touched the ball)
