Update
A 25-member steering committee is meeting monthly to develop the SW 9th Corridor Plan. As a part of these meetings, the steering committee has identified five key areas to provide focus for the planning and implementation efforts.
1. Property redevelopment. Finding viable reuses for blighted properties is the priority. Blighted and boarded up buildings can decrease the value of an entire neighborhood. To this end, the steering committee has identified 15 specific properties that need attention and three focus areas for redevelopment. City staff is currently exploring all available options for these areas. However, since all of these properties are owned by private individuals, the City needs property owner cooperation in order to move forward on these sites.
2. Property enhancement. Many of the structures along the corridor are in need of a facelift. Helping property owners obtain funding to improve their buildings is a focus of our plan. City staff is studying various options for a façade improvement program to assist property owners in investing in their property.
3. Housing. Almost 45% of the Corridor is either housing or apartments. Ensuring these buildings are enhancing the Corridor is an important piece of the revitalization strategy. Enhancing the housing stock along SW 9th involves prioritizing existing resources for property owners along the Corridor.
4. Land use and transportation. Developing a long-term strategy for land use and transportation along the Corridor is a key objective of the plan. The small lots and fast moving traffic, along with the lack of parking, make SW 9th a difficult area for businesses to thrive. While this is an issue that cannot be fully remedied by the plan, there are opportunities to mitigate some of the potential negative impact from these current conditions.
5. Organizational structure for plan implementation. The final focus area is the development of a community organization to implement the plan. This is where we will need support from everyone in the community to ensure the implementation of the plan is a success. There will be a role for everyone and together we will make SW 9th corridor a corridor that signifies South Side Pride.
