Baker Electric and Past President of the Chamber
Where can you visit a desert and snow ski in the same day? Dubai! In June, I had the opportunity to visit the rapidly developing destination through a cultural exploration tour led by the Greater Des Moines Partnership called Wonders of Dubai. A short 45 years ago Dubai was just a tiny fishing village harvesting pearls from the sea. Today, the city is one of the top tourist spots in the world, with towering skyscrapers, booming international business and the second busiest airport in the world.
The Partnership did a fantastic job of organizing the trip, which allowed the group to see cultural and historic sites as well as gain a better understanding of how business in Dubai operates. I had the opportunity to visit the tallest building in the world - Burj Khalifa Tower, the Palm Islands, a mosque at Abu Dhabi, the gold and spice souks, Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai, took a 4x4 desert safari, dinner boat cruise, and traditional Abra (water taxi). The trip was an opportunity of a lifetime, allowing me to better understand how another culture operates. In addition, I left with many new friends and lasting memories.

CENTRAL IOWA LEADERS PROMOTE REGIONAL PRIORITIES
ON THE PARTNERSHIP'S 35TH ANNUAL D.C. TRIP
About 197 of Central Iowa's business, civic and regional community leaders traveled to our nation's capital and presented a public policy agenda to promote regional policy priorities and economic development projects during the Greater Des Moines Partnership's 35th annual advocacy trip to Washington, D.C. in May. The Greater Des Moines Partnership delegation was an unprecedented representation from constituents to the Hill - both in size and access to the congressional delegation. Not only were all of Iowa's Representatives and Senators present and engaged - there were also appearances from Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Vice President Joe Biden. "This year's Washington, D.C. trip focused on key infrastructure, innovation, strengthening the business climate, and quality of life priority issues and projects," said 2014 Chair Paul Schickler of DuPont Pioneer. "As always, we bring real-world perspective from Central Iowa and, as a unified community, continue to build strong relationships with federal policymakers." Throughout the three-day trip, participants had an opportunity to advocate for key issues facing the Central Iowa region. Participants met with members of Iowa's Congressional delegation, the Administration, and their staffs. The Partnership hosted two Congressional Leadership Luncheons and a brunch. Workshops focused on education, housing, health and wellness, immigration, and the impact of the Farm Bill. While in D.C., the Partnership recognized significant achievements from many of the Affiliates and attendees. The awards and recognitions shared during DM/DC 2014 included:
Affiliate D.C. "Longevity Award" presented to the Hon. Bob Andeweg, Mayor of Urbandale and Attorney with Nyemaster Goode PC.
|
Government Policy Council (GPC) "Leadership Award" to David Caris of MidAmerican Energy, as the 2014 GPC Chair.
|
Capital Crossroads Award - recognizing vision and regionalism - was awarded to Kathryn Kunert, Vice President of Business and Community Development at MidAmerican Energy and Co-Chair of Capital Crossroads' Business Capital.
