In Memory

We honor the following athletes. One of the highlights of the Senior Olympics is the friendships that form statewide. One of the hardships is losing these friendships. If you would like to place a tribute to a fellow athlete we will try to run these quarterly. Please send the information to info@tnseniorolympics.com.

John Smartt

John Smartt was born February 24, 1919, and died peacefully at Shannondale Healthcare Center in Knoxville on November 13, 2013. He attended the University of Tennessee and was a charter member of Omicron Delta Kappa, president of the Independent Students Association, and graduated with a B.S. in agriculture in 1942. During World War II he served as an army officer in the Aleutian Islands before returning to UT and receiving a law degree in 1948.

From 1980 - 2012 he competed in all the running events at district and state Senior Olympics meets. He represented Tennessee in the 1995 National Senior Games in San Antonio and won a fifth place award in the 75 - 79 age group.

He gave freely of his time and talents and we shall miss his wisdom, guidance, love, and sweet singing.

Linda West

Hello Fellow Tennessee Seniors,

Some of you did not know Linda West.  But, those of you who did, were aware of her physical and spiritual beauty and that she was an avid athlete.  On Thursday evening, October 24, 2013, Linda Lunn West accepted the separation of her physical life and her spiritual life and passed into the arms of the Lord that she so diligently served.

Linda was #10 on our Memphis Age Defyers basketball team.  She could easily pop a shot to the right of and just beyond the free throw line.  She could also drive in and lay up two points against the back board.  She could hang tight on defense against  an opponent who attempted a drive on her.  Linda loved the game of basketball. She was a dedicated UofMeM Tigers fan, and strongly supported the Grizz.  She also loved golf and tennis, though she sacrificed participation in those activities in the Senior games to remain committed to the Age Defyers basketball team.

Our basketball team and our circle of friends will never be the same.  However, we recognize that both are much stronger because Linda West was a central member.

John Dooley

Dr. John F. Dooley, III, 60, passed away suddenly on October 25, 2013.

John was an outstanding man in every way. He was loving and thoughtful of everybody and was the backbone of his family. He was a wonderful role model and caring person in all family & business relationships. He was very encouraging to everyone, especially in wanting them to believe in themselves and what they could accomplish. John was very athletic and participated in sports from High School until the present. His most recent accomplishments were as a participant in the Senior Olympics, winning medals in pole vaulting, racquetball & volleyball. Dr. Dooley was loved by all of his patients who benefited from his compassionate and competent care & appreciated his encouragement toward their recovery. He was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church.
