NEW QUALIFYING SYSTEM
State Finals
As mentioned in last summer's state finals news and the December 2012 e-mail newsletter, the Tennessee Senior Olympics is undergoing an exciting change in 2013. We are embarking on a new qualifying system.
Our annual state finals will move to the month of June. This year the event will be June 21-27, 2013 in Williamson County. The move is necessary as Battle Ground Academy and other venues can only be secured during the high school athletic dead period for the foreseeable future.
Over the past twenty years, the state finals has doubled in size to approximately 2,000 athletes. To properly plan for such a large event it is necessary to move the registration deadline to late March. As a result, our board of directors is revamping our system.
The district competitions have been moved to the fall of each year. Each fall, athletes will have the opportunity to qualify at one of our ten district events for the next summer's state finals.
This will work as detailed below for 2013 and 2014:
2013 STATE FINALS - (JUNE 21-27, 2013)
- NO district qualification required. FOR THIS YEAR ONLY. For more information, please read FAQ section below.
FALL 2013
- Athletes must participate in one of Tennessee's ten districts in order to qualify for the 2014 State Finals.
JUNE 2014
- Qualified athletes will participate for a chance to move on to the 2015 Nationals in Minneapolis, MN.
We are excited about the opportunities that a new system will allow. Our mission
is to promote healthy lifestyles for seniors through sports and fitness. With the
ability to spread out events, it offers more of a year-round approach. In the spring,
many districts plan to offer clinics or mini-tournaments to prepare athletes for
the state finals.
