TENNESSEE
 SENIOR OLYMPICS
February 2013

The Tennessee Senior Olympics is gearing up for another great year! Here is
information that you might find helpful from recent board decisions:

Gold Medal
NEW QUALIFYING SYSTEM
State Finals

As mentioned in last summer's state finals news and the December 2012 e-mail newsletter, the Tennessee Senior Olympics is undergoing an exciting change in 2013. We are embarking on a new qualifying system.

Our annual state finals will move to the month of June. This year the event will  be June 21-27, 2013 in Williamson County. The move is necessary as Battle Ground Academy and other venues can only be secured during the high school athletic dead period for the foreseeable future.

Over the past twenty years, the state finals has doubled in size to approximately 2,000 athletes.  To properly plan for such a large event it is necessary to move the registration deadline to late March.  As a result, our board of directors is revamping our system.

The district competitions have been moved to the fall of each year.  Each fall, athletes will have the opportunity to qualify at one of our ten district events for the next summer's state finals.
This will work as detailed below for 2013 and 2014:

2013 STATE FINALS  - (JUNE 21-27, 2013)
- NO district qualification required.  FOR THIS YEAR ONLY.  For more information, please read FAQ section below.

FALL 2013
-  Athletes must participate in one of Tennessee's ten districts in order to qualify for the 2014 State Finals.

JUNE 2014
Qualified athletes will participate for a chance to move on to the 2015 Nationals in Minneapolis, MN.

We are excited about the opportunities that a new system will allow. Our mission
is to promote healthy lifestyles for seniors through sports and fitness.  With the
ability to spread out events, it offers more of a year-round approach.  In the spring,
many districts plan to offer clinics or mini-tournaments to prepare athletes for
the state finals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Regarding NEW Qualifying System

The Tennessee Senior Olympics State Finals are scheduled for June 21-27 in Williamson County.  For this year ONLY, athletes may register directly for the state finals as we switch to the new system.  Qualification is not necessary. All sports are open. State entry forms will be mailed to last year's state finals participants.
  • Online registration will be available starting on March 9th
  • Early Bird Deadline: March 30, 2013
  • Final Deadline: April 13, 2013

What if my age changes from fall 2013 to summer 2014?
Athletes will be placed in age groups depending on their age on December 31 of the current year.  If an athlete ages to a different age group for the state finals, he or she will be placed
in the new group.  For example, imagine a scenario whereby an athlete is 59 in the fall of 2013 but turns 60 in the year 2014.  That athlete will compete in the 55-59 age group in 2013 and 60-64 in 2014.

Will all sports require qualification at a district?
No.  We plan to keep some sports "open."  A list will be provided in the fall of 2013.

STATE FINALS SCHEDULE and VENUE CHANGES

Please click here to view the state finals schedule for June 21-27:

Changes from last year include:

BASKETBALL

We are excited to move back to A Game for this year's basketball tournament and skill competitions.

PICKLEBALL

Pickleball will be moved to Battle Ground Academy where there will be more room for spectators and check-in.   If necessary, some matches may still be played at the Franklin Rec Center.

TRACK and FIELD

The 100m run will be moved to 5:00pm on Saturday, June 22. The power walk and fitness walk will follow at 6:45pm.

The long jump, high jump, and pole vault will be moved to late afternoon on Friday, June 21.  We realize that these jumps at the very end of our previous track meets have made for a very tiring experience.  We would like to try this change.

We encourage you to take a look.  The link is http://tnseniorolympics.com/calendar_91.html
