Celebrating Women's History Month!

From Marie Curie to Sally Ride, from Ella Fitzgerald to Joan Rivers, from Queen Elizabeth to Elizabeth Warren, heroines of science, politics, exploration, and art are in our hearts this month as we commemorate their contributions to peace and knowledge, often under extreme prejudice and against staggering odds. Here's hoping that we can move forward into a future where women of every society and culture get their seats at the table, for the good of all!

This month I saw one of my favorite bands in concert for the first time... Maroon 5!! They played at Madison Square Garden. It was amazing, one of the best concerts I've been to. I was really close to the stage. (Section B, Row 13) The stage went out into the crowd, so I was literally 5 feet away from Adam Levine at some points!! They played a lot of old songs and some songs off of their new album. Rozzi Crane opened the show and then the band Magic! went on second. Their big hit is "Rude". It was an awesome experience, and I would love to see them live again.  Looking forward to going to see "Train" and "The Fray" in June, "Imagine Dragons" and "U2 in July.  Rock On!!  Jeannie..

March 2015
Spring is coming.
It darn well better be.
So it looks like it's time to switch out our snarky complaints about cold to our snarky complaints about heat! In the meantime, here's hoping we can have a few perfect weeks of open windows, singing birds, Tony awards, and sidewalk dining.....ah......
Big shout-outs to our March babies! Michael Dimen, Tatiana, Nakeya, Jaye, Rene and Harouna, as well as out fearless co-founder, the one and only Butch Grier!

Client Spotlight:
Marizete Browne

In the world of Brazilian dance, "ginga" is the word used to describe the attitude and bearing of a Samba dancer, the cool swagger, the swaying hips, and the clever twinkle in the eye. Although I didn't have a word for it before we spoke about her philosophy of dance training, but every time Marizete Browne walks in to a room, she emanates "ginga". Raised in Rio, and trained at the Academia de Dança de Salão Egídio, Marizete now teaches the traditional Brazilian dances of Samba and Forro throughout the Tri-state area. She has performed and provided dance instruction at Midsummer Night Swing- Brazilian Night at Lincoln Center, NYC; Brooklyn Public Library's "Borrow a Beat" series, Brooklyn, NY; Tribeca Brazilian Film Festival, NYC; Battery Park City Parks Conservancy Evening of Brazilian Family Dance, NYC and the Riverfront Swing Series for Quarteto Olinda at the Westport Arts Center, Westport, Connecticut.
Her greatest joy is sharing the social aspects of Brazilian dance with her group classes, in which she teaches "a little of the language and culture, so students can understand where the style and attitude comes from", in other words, the elusive ginga. Marizete waxes poetic about the way men used to dress for Samba many years ago: sharply, all in white, with a sly confidence. Although the usual wardrobe has changed to jeans and short sleeves, Marizete still focuses on the importance of ginga:"I teach them how they should act, 'I know how to DANCE, I can GET you!'".

Marizete hosts a Samba social every second Sunday of the month at Ripley-Grier 520, and beginner group classes on Wednesdays. For more info, visit her website,

Feng Shui and Fitness

Spring is in the air!!   This is the year of the Wood Ram.  Rams feng shui color chart were born in the years 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015.  As with all Chinese Zodiac character/signs the Ram year comes every 12 years.  There are 12 Zodiac signs In Chinese Astrology:  Snake, Horse, Ram,  Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger,  Rabbit and Dragon..

The following excerpts are taken from the Classic Chinese Almanac, by Dr Edgar Sung:

People born in the Ram year are called the Good Samaritans of the zodiac.  Artistic and creative, but when at their worst, emotional and withdrawn.  Rams overspend and are not good at handling their own finances.  They are generally good-natured and will share what they have. They are followers, not leaders and are not good at making decisions.  All rams are romantics, very sensitive to beauty and balance.

This year will be very busy and lucrative year for the Ram.  They should pay more attention to their physical and mental health.  Be patient and calm.  Spend more time with family. To improve luck attend more happy social events and weddings.  Horses, Pigs, Tigers & Rabbits complement Rams.  Rats, Oxen & Dogs do not..

Our fitness classes are booming!!  We have new students every week this month.  I have increased the content of the classes to include more power lifting (hand weights), squats, planking and core work, alternating walking and 20 second speed bursts and a floor stretch.  We also move from one set of exercises to the next with minimum down time.  We do take pulse checks and water breaks.  This month I am celebrating my 43rd year teaching fitness classes.   I started with The Lotte Berk Method when I was 25. That first year changed my life and set me on my current path.  I love working with performers and currently have actors, dancers and singers as students.  Bob Audy called my class the " best workout in the city" (geared toward older fitness students).  My age range is from 40's to 80's at this time.  My classes are no more than 10 students and I teach at the RG 131 West 72nd Street location.

Butch and I are celebrating our 32nd year together this month and also our 28th year in business together, originally as Fitness Concepts for Life, Inc., then New York Spaces, Inc., and currently known as Ripley-Grier Studios.  He is an Ox and I am a Dog, he is a Pices and I am a Libran..."Here's Looking at You Kid."
