This is the first in a series of e-newsletters created for the purpose of providing information regarding the Distance Education and Training Council.

Who is the DETC?

The DETC is a federally (since 1959) and CHEA recognized institutional accrediting body. Colleges and universities that are accredited by the DETC are also institutional members of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). DETC has been serving the nation since 1926. Institutions accredited by DETC include the Army Institute for Professional Development, Grantham University, Columbia Southern University, Henley-Putnam University, the Marine Corps Institute, and more than 100 others.

DETC has worked for more than 86 years to ensure that the colleges and schools it accredits are delivering the best quality learning possible to military students. DETC has a philosophy of stimulating continuous school improvement, and its consumer protection standards are highly regarded. Through DETC's member institutions, millions of military and veteran students have received a high quality education at a reasonable cost over many decades. Over 1.2 million Vietnam-era veterans used their G.I. Bill benefits at a DETC-accredited institution.

Misconceptions about the DETC
The DETC is fully committed to ensuring that every institution it accredits delivers the highest possible quality educational experience to our nation's military members. Occasionally misconceptions in the military community appear regarding DETC accredited institutions. These include misinformation on credit transfer, quality of the educational programs, academic rigor, faculty quality, and other faulty beliefs. We will address these concerns, introduce you to some instructors, and provide you with a helpful overview of a vibrant community of institutions dedicated to being "military friendly." You will see that DETC institutions represent one of the most value-adding and effective educational opportunities anywhere for military members.

About our students
DETC institutions can point to an overall 69% program graduation rate. More than 97% of DETC students report that they were satisfied with their education and would recommend

their alma mater to a friend, and 97% of DETC students said their experience matched or exceeded their expectations. Three out of four DETC students who attempted to have their credits or degree accepted at another university report they were successful. And since 1890, more than 140 million Americans have elected to study with a DETC accredited institution. Meet some of our Outstanding Graduates
  • Master Sergeant Reginald Hurt, U.S. Army, graduated from Grantham University. His degree from Grantham University assisted him in achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. SGM Hurt is a strong advocate of DETC accredited schools and has just completed his master's degree at Grantham.

  • Corporal Arsenio Taverez-Santos completed 66 courses through the Marine Corps Institute, which helped him earn his degree from Pennsylvania State University.

  • Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Tem Frierson is a successful Columbia Southern University graduate. He attributes his smooth transition from the U.S. Navy into his civilian career to the education he acquired and the degree he earned at CSU.
