Resources for K-12 from Leading Utility Partners

Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) have long been valued partners and stakeholders in the workforce system. Companies such as Sempra Energy, PG&E, and Southern California Edison have taken leadership roles throughout the state in advancing workforce education for clean energy. As we look to build the future workforce, getting younger students interested in science, energy, and the environment paves the pathway to STEM careers. These IOUs have introduced K-12 level green/clean energy education resources through a variety of reports and websites. SoCal Edison hosts Peak Students, with learning resources for parents, students and teachers, among its featured K-12 clean energy initiatives. The Sempra Energy Foundation funds grants in the areas of environmental education programs for K-12 learners, and PG&E hosts the Energenius Program for teachers and students at each grade level. As you meet with K-12 education partners in your local areas, take the time to share these valuable resources when you talk about market demand for STEM skills and careers in green and clean energy.

How Does California Measure Up?

Next10 is an independent nonpartisan organization focused on innovation and the intersection between the economy, the environment, and the quality of life for all Californians. They have created a new first ever interactive website called Compare50.org that tracks key economic indicators, allowing users to track and compare dozens of economic trends over time in all 50 states. It answers questions such as: Which state is an innovation leader? Which is an export leader? And, which state has the highest declines in poverty?

By drawing on data gathered for the latest Next10 report titled How Does California's Economic Performance Compare to Other States, the released beta version of this interactive website allows users to see clearly how California ranks nationally in economic indicators and trends.

Check out Compare50.org here and stay tuned for future iterations based on your and others feedback.

Collaboration Continues

Employment Training Panel Contract Renewed for Two Years

On Friday, January 25th Barbara Halsey and Administrative Consultant Steve Duscha presented CWA's ETP Contract proposal to the Employment Training Panel. The proposal represents CWA's second contract with ETP, as our first contract for $260,250 will successfully complete on 5/1/13. CWA was notified in early February that the training funds proposal was approved in the amount of $401,640, in a two-year contract that began 2/4/13.

This ETP contract will allow us to collaborate with local WIBs in Monterey, Santa Barbara, San Mateo and the South Bay to provide customized on-site training to manufacturing companies that wish to enhance the skills and improve the productivity of their workforce. Steve Ducsha, along with Quest Consulting, has done an outstanding job of ensuring the success of our first project and will undoubtedly do the same with this project. We will be contacting those WIBs that committed to this collaboration in the near future to discuss project launch timelines and business referral processes. For more information on the ETP grants, read the ETP press release.
