AF key Academic Foundation

The school year is almost over, but the Academic Foundation is still hard at work! This month we approved grants for the Guidance, Theatre, English, Science and World Languages departments. We also announced our proposed slate of officers for the 2015-16 school year. Click here to read the list. This slate will be voted on at our final meeting on May 12th.

Special thanks to Derek Thomas for his informative presentation on Advanced Placement at our meeting last week. Even seasoned parents learned something new! Our speakers in May will be Ms. Spinka and Ms. Dicus. They will provide ideas on keeping our students engaged over the summer. Please join us! More details to come.

guidance Guidance News

2015-16 Scheduling: Students received proof copies of their schedules on April 14th. Students should indicate any change requests on this form and return it to their homeroom teacher by April 23rd. All forms submitted must include a student and a parent signature. Any students who are requesting to be placed in a higher level course must obtain a signature from the appropriate teacher or the change will not occur.

Students and parents, please be advised, this will be your last opportunity to make changes. Our master schedule and teacher assignments will be based on these revised requests; therefore, changes next fall will be limited to correcting errors or academic necessity.

HCC Fall Dual Enrollment: Students may begin registering now for fall classes at HCC. Since students are required to obtain approval from their Plant counselor to register, your last day to complete registration paperwork will be June 5th. Please see the guidance page of Plant's website for complete information. Fall classes will begin August 17th and end on December 8th.

summer school Summer Virtual Classes
Summer classes fill up quickly! If you are planning to take an online class this summer to meet your graduation requirement, register now to reserve your spot. If you are not ready to start your class at this time, you can sign up now but request a May or June start date. If you wait until June to register, your start date may be delayed until July or August, depending on course availability.

Plant counselors will be approving FLVS requests for current private school 8th graders in May and public school 8th graders in early June. Prior to that, 8th graders must be approved by the counselor at their current school.
Senior Banquet
The senior class banquet will be held in the gymnasium on April 27th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Tickets are $30 each and are available this week during lunch.

A lot of work has to be done to convert the gym into an inviting space. We will be renting tables and chairs, a big screen for the senior video, linens, lighting, creating table arrangements, and the dinner will be catered.

We need any and all parent volunteers to make this event a success. We want senior parents to serve the dinner and donate desserts. Volunteers are also needed to decorate the day of the event in order to transform the gym into a beautiful venue. Contact Beth Garcia if you can help.

Faculty Honor Roll

Seniors! Class of 2015! We will never forget about you. What a great class and what a tremendous impact you have had upon Plant High School. Looking back on your four years at Plant you will have memories of events, friends, and the music that made your high school years special. But now, before you graduate, you have a chance to say thank you to those faculty members who were with you along the way and who made your years at Plant years that you will never forget. It's easy to say thank you. Watch this video made by our own Plant High Students on how to recognize a faculty member through the Faculty Honor Roll.

AP Testing Information

Due to the high volume of AP testing at our school, we are seeking parent volunteers to assist with AP exam proctoring. Testing this year will be from May 4th to May 15th. Morning exam duties will run from 7 until approximately 11:45 am; afternoon exam duties will begin around 11:30 am and end between 4 and 4:30 pm. If you have a flexible schedule, please consider helping us out this year. Click here to register to be a proctor.

AP Exam Attendance Policy. Juniors and seniors who take AP exams automatically receive school business for the remainder of the day of each exam they take. Please note: all students need to be aware that although this attendance policy excuses your absence, you will still be responsible for make-up work, and you may miss important instruction on those days. Use your best judgment when deciding not to attend classes before and/or after AP exams. Freshmen and sophomores who take AP Exams are required to attend all classes before and/or after their AP exams, unless an "AP Permission Form" has been submitted. Students who have submitted the AP Permission Form will have school business before and/or after their AP exams.

See the guidance page of Plant's website for more detailed information about 2015 AP testing dates and procedures.
2015-16 Pantherette Auditions
If you're new to Plant, or are already here and interested in dance and learning how to spin a flag, sabre and rifle, we have the club for you! The Pantherettes will be starting their ninth year this fall and will be hosting auditions May 19-21 from 5:30-8:30 pm in the band room, next to the gym. No experience is necessary - just a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard. We can teach you the rest! The Pantherettes are part of the Plant Band and perform during the half time show at Plant football games and at other school events like pep rallies, Panther Prowl and community events like Gasparilla. All you need to try out is you but if you have any questions, please e-mail PlantHSguard@gmail.com.
Girls Varsity Lacrosse Ends a Winning Season!
The Lady Panthers Lacrosse team had cause to celebrate a winning spring, ending their season as District champions with a record of 15-2. Friday night's loss by 1 goal to Olympia in the Regional playoffs proved the Panthers will return next year with a mission path to State. Thank you to our classmates, parents and friends, and everyone else who supported the team this year. Look out for us in 2016!
