PTSA Update
Please join us on March 3rd at 6 pm (note earlier time) in the Auditorium for our next General Membership meeting. We will be presenting the slate for the 2015-2016 Executive Board and will take nominations for the Volunteer of the Year Award. Please contact Beth Schatzberg if you know someone who is deserving of this award.

Please join us after the meeting for our first ever College and Career Fair which will be a great opportunity for students to visit with various vocational schools and community colleges. The format for this event will be similar to college night.

March 5th is conference night and we will have speakers available throughout the evening so that parents can be informed regarding adolescent relationships, stress management, anxiety, time management, and test taking. The sessions will be held in the Auditorium and Media Center. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Empanada who is graciously providing the teachers and staff with dinner at our Spring Faculty Dinner during conference night. We greatly appreciate your support!

PTSA works hard to provide programs and funding that benefit all students so please join and/or donate today. Your donation helps provide the funding for each of these programs.

AF key Academic Foundation

This month, the Academic Foundation funded a new training initiative for teachers at Plant. Teachers will visit classrooms in small groups to observe instruction focused on specific standards. After the instruction walks, teachers will meet with a facilitator to discuss what they saw, and identify the academic focus and how it applies to standards. Our grant will cover the cost of substitutes for the day the teachers are observing. The goal is to update and refresh teaching practices as they pertain to the new Florida State Standards.

At our meeting earlier this month, we discussed federal programs related to education and state legislation that affects public school funding. If you would like to be added to an email list to receive updates on these topics, please email our president, Jennifer Wiezorek.

Don't miss out! This is last call for Willingness to Serve forms from parents and Impact Scholarship applications from Seniors. Scholarship applications are available in the College Resource Room and are due back by March 3rd. Willingness to Serve forms are due by this Friday. Turn them in at the main office or email to Kristy Hall.

Please join us for our next meeting on March 17th at 9:15 in the Cafeteria. Our guest speaker is Ms. Karla Kirkwood, a retired college applications counselor. We are also presenting bylaws revisions. Have a great spring break!

conference night Conference Night

March 5th 3:15-5:00 & 6:00-9:00 pm
Conference Night will be held on Thursday, March 5th. There are two conference periods; the first from 3:15-5:00 pm and the second from 6:00-9:00 pm. Parents may come at any time during these sessions to meet with their student's teachers. Simply join the line at the classroom door of teachers with whom you are interested in meeting. Parents will be seen in turn. Please be mindful of others waiting in line when you are meeting with the teacher. You may visit as many of your student's teachers as you wish. Class of 2015 Important Senior Updates
We want the class of 2015 to finish strong. The following information was shared with our seniors at the Senior Town Hall Meeting:
  • In order to graduate, online classes must be complete by the May 15th deadline.
  • Deadline to turn in service hours is May 1st.
  • Since the senior schedule is a factor in college admissions, we are not permitting any seniors to drop AP courses. Any exceptions must be approved by Mr. Nelson.
  • Mid-year reports have been sent to colleges as requested. Any senior still needing mid-year reports should submit those requests ASAP.
  • The Bright Futures senior application is open and should be completed ASAP. The link can be found on the Guidance page of Plant's website.
  • Plant senior scholarship applications are now available in Room 101 and are due by March 3rd.
  • Seniors should log into Family Connection to report their admission status.
  • Even though class rank does "freeze" today, final transcripts, including second semester grades, will be submitted to colleges in June. A severe drop in grades can jeopardize a student's admission status.

guidance Guidance Updates
Progress reports are being issued via homeroom tomorrow, February 26th. Students are asked to return the signed progress report to their homeroom teacher on February 27th.

Programming update: Counselors have met with all but a handful of students and the course requests have been entered into the computer scheduler. In April, we will print copies of the schedules for students to make last minute changes. If students or parents have concerns about course recommendations from teachers, please communicate with the teachers directly. Teachers have been asked to identify specific expectations for students requesting more challenging classes. We will include a space on the April schedule form for teachers to sign off on any level recommendation changes. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to revise schedules. Once these April updates have been processed, we will consider the schedules finalized. In August, when we mail schedules to students, we will be available to make schedule corrections only, not to revise previous choices.

Summer semester HCC Dual Enrollment registration begins on March 20th. The deadline for all paperwork to be submitted is April 7th. Classes begin on May 18th. For detailed information and forms, click on the Dual Enrollment link on the Guidance page of the Plant website.
