Academic Foundation That was certainly an informative meeting yesterday! Thank you to Michael Smith, the district's Secondary Math Supervisor, for educating parents on the Springboard math curriculum. Thanks also to Ms. Cozzi, Ms. Clark and Ms. Kale for detailing changes in math and English classrooms as schools transition to Florida Standards and the FSA. A suggested resource for parents and students is the FLDOE training portal that includes sample FSA questions. Mr. Smith also recommends students check out Khan Academy and TenMarks Math for extra help with math practice and instruction. All of these resources are available free of charge.
We also wish to thank EVOS, an AF business partner, who later this month will be catering a luncheon for a group of students being recognized by guidance for meeting their academic goals. Congratulations students!
Please keep Academic Foundation in mind as you plan your year-end charitable giving. We are a 501(c)3 organization so your donation is fully tax deductible. Visit our website to donate and to see recently approved grant requests. Happy Holidays!

Athletic Foundation
Donations can still be made to the Cindy Ruff Tuff Memorial Scholarship through December 19th in the Administration Office. Cindy served as the President of the Athletic Foundation for over 4 years. Cindy outlined her wishes for the Plant Athletic Foundation to establish this scholarship for the Girls Basketball Program. The Athletic Foundation and Lady Panther Basketball Program are working diligently to make sure that her expectations are fulfilled. The goal is that her spirit will live forever in the Lady Panther players who earn the scholarship and that her memory will remain alive at Plant High School for years to come. Contributions can be made payable to the Plant Athletic Foundation.
Just in time for Christmas, great gifts, gift cards and apparel for all of the Panthers on your list! Check out The Paw - Plant's on campus store. Open every school day from 11:30 to 1:30 or online.

Florida Standards Assessment
The FCAT is gone. Our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will be taking the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) test this year. This test is different in content and format than the tests our students are accustomed to. Practice tests are available online here. Some portions of the test require students to type their responses. For keyboarding practice, click here.

Course Selection Timeline for the 2015-2016 School Year December 9-12: Counselors visit classes and provide information and instructions for choosing courses. December 18: Students must turn in their programming sheets with parent signatures to their English teachers. Starting in late January and continuing through February, students will have individual conferences with their counselors to review their course selections. By early March, counselors must input all student course requests. In April, a copy of the course selections will be printed for students to review and make final corrections.
Special note: Due to the magnitude of parent inquiries during this busy time, counselors will not be able to respond to phone calls or emails about course selection for next year. Parents can submit any questions in writing and attach them to the programming sheet or follow up with a phone call or email later in March or April.

Counselors in Classrooms
Sophomores Before the Thanksgiving break, the counselors conducted hands-on seminars with all of the sophomores using Guidmii and the ACT World of Work map. The students used Guidmii to see their academic status and explore some college options. The World of Work map helped the students explore possible careers and find out what type of training or college major is appropriate for the careers they chose. We encourage students and parents to explore these websites further as you discuss your goals and make plans for college.
Juniors
Coming soon, counselors will work with juniors to lay the groundwork for college applications next fall. Start your test prep now! Students need to prioritize preparation for SAT and/or ACT tests. Encourage your student to utilize the online resources available on the guidance page of Plant's website. Click the ACT/SAT link for test prep options. All juniors will be taking a free SAT at school on February 25th. They can get started with SAT online prep today by entering our school code 101700 for access.
