The View From Here
Lon Ferguson, EdD, CSP

BCSP is an exciting and promising organization. The path we took in 2014 contains many accomplishments, promoting continued work in advancing both the safety profession and safety professionals. We can now view these accomplishments from a clear perspective and reflect on what we achieved.

The launch of the BCSP Certification Management System (CMS) is a prominent milestone in our development. The CMS, coupled with the new website, places all the tools to apply for and maintain BCSP Safety, Health and Environmental (SH&E) certifications in one spot, which is easily accessible by the end user. Nearly all the processes required for certification begin now with "My Profile" and can be managed online. Those processes not yet online, such as Recertification and Group Management, are currently being constructed and will add even more convenience for the end user.

The further integration of our programs into the World-Wide Web has developed at an opportune time with the growth of our certifications' global presence. BCSP was met with great interest at the American Society of Safety Engineers' (ASSE) Safety India 2014 Professional Development Conference in Chennai, India. Shortly thereafter, we were able to provide those holding the government of India's Diploma in Industrial Safety their own path to the CSP. In addition to this outreach, BCSP was granted special consultative status by the United Nations, enabling BCSP to actively engage with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), its subsidiary bodies, as well as the UN Secretariat, programs, funds and agencies. Additionally, we have continued our contributions to the International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organisations (INSHPO).

These accomplishments would not be possible without our certifications being the gold standard in the SH&E profession. Certificants demonstrate this value in their work every day, and we are proud to highlight those achievements in our annual Award of Excellence (AoE) ceremony. Submissions are now open for the 2015 Awards of Excellence.

Because of this year's achievements, BCSP now has new opportunities and the avenues to pursue them. In our service to the SH&E profession and practitioners, we are fluid and nimble, but our vision remains constant - creating a safer world through safety, health and environmental certification. The Board of Directors and staff of BCSP, along with input from our stakeholders, have put a lot of work into getting us where we are today. I thank all involved for the hard work and I believe that we have an even greater future ahead.

Making the Results Your Own
When considering career paths, opportunities that offer the ability to help others are attractive options. Many that come to mind are focused on assisting people in distress. Safety is another type, with the ultimate goal of preventing risk of harm from even occurring. Safety, health and environmental (SH&E) practice is a field that allows its professionals to truly own the results of their efforts.

Desiring a career that directly assisted others, Jim Cooper, CHST first chose a career in law enforcement. He certainly found satisfaction where he was able to protect people, but his experience changed him. "One night while working in the Oakland California area, it hit me!" Cooper says. "I realized for the rest of my career as a cop I would almost always arrive after someone needs help. That night I began thinking of a career that would have a more positive impact on protecting people." His thoughts led him to safety.

Cooper's dedication to safety is rooted in being able to see his impact daily. "My passion comes from results," Cooper explains. "As a safety professional, I believe that one accident is too many. I'm passionate because I see the positive results gained by having a competent, dedicated, safety professional on site. Being directly accountable to my coworkers, company, and public, fuels my passion."

BCSP is equally interested in results, its vision "creating a safer world through safety, health and environmental certification." Cooper connected with this vision when he was working for a transportation company as a safety manager. "I received a call from my mentor, Virginia Siegel, Owner of Onsite Health and Safety," he recalls. "During our conversation, she mentioned the CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) and felt it was the next step on my career path. She told me, 'doors will open if you pass this test.' - She was right."

Cooper thinks of safety as a type of "catch-22 field." "In order to get a job, you need experience and in order to get experience, you need a job," he explains. "Nobody wants to put you in charge of safety until you've proven yourself. The CHST is a step in the ladder of proving yourself.... My life changed when I passed my CHST."

"The last six years have been the most rewarding years of my working life. I see so much potential in the safety field and I'm excited by my new position with Gordon Prill- Architecture, Engineering, and Construction."

Every week other people interested in safety ask Cooper how they might enter the safety field. He highly recommends finding a mentor, and is very thankful he was able to connect with Siegel. One might now consider him a mentor as well, and his story an example of all safety professional's capacity to develop into leaders.

"It's great to have a safety person, but it's better to turn everyone into a safety person," Cooper says. "The reward comes in the form healthier workers, lower insurance rates, higher profits, better morale, and a better reputation. That's what I contribute to."

BCSP advances the safety profession by advancing safety professionals, our certificants leading the way.

Recognizing the achievements of CSPs, OHSTs, and CHSTs, certificants may suggest themselves or colleagues for these prestigious awards. Each candidate is evaluated by the BCSP Awards Reveiw Committee, with recipients honored in the Award of Excellence Ceremony at the American Society of Safety Engineer's (ASSE) Professional Development Conference (PDC).

IndiaBCSP Provides Those Holding India's Diploma in Industrial Safety a New Path to the CSP
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) has completed an evaluation of the Government of India's Diploma in Industrial Safety, finding those who hold the diploma qualify for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) examination by waiver of the Associate Safety Professional (ASP).

The Diploma in Industrial Safety is offered by the Government of India, Ministry of Labour & Employment's Regional Labour Institutes (RLI) in Chennai, Faridabad, Kanpur, and Kolkata and the Central Labor Institute in Mumbai (CLI). BCSP evaluated its equivalency against the ASP's requirements, noting the similarities in the processes and standards used by BCSP and the RLIs/CLI.

"Safety is valued by people around the world," explains BCSP Board of Directors President Dr. Lon Ferguson, CSP. "This agreement promises to strengthen the protection of people, property and environment."

"BCSP is committed to working alongside organizations that share our vision, and we look forward to further collaboration in India and elsewhere," added BCSP's CEO, Dr. Treasa Turnbeaugh, CSP, CET. BCSP maintains Memoranda of Understanding with organizations in several countries, is a member of the International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organizations (INSHPO), and attended the first ASSE Safety India conference this year.

While the agreement is in effect, individuals who have earned the Diploma in Industrial Safety from CLI/RLIs of the Government of India, remain in good standing with that body, meet any continuing requirements, and meet the eligibility requirements of BCSP have the opportunity to apply for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) via this new agreement.

New BCSP Recertification Quizzes Online

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals' Recertification quiz program has been updated and is now offering nearly two-dozen quizzes for certificants seeking Recertification Points.

The quizzes test the taker's knowledge, utilizing the technical contents of well-circulated membership organization journals, national consensus standards, and regulations. A quiz's length and difficulty determine the price and number of points awarded to those who pass it.

When you register and pay for a quiz, a receipt with further information on taking your quiz will be emailed to you. You are permitted to attempt the quiz immediately. Upon completing a quiz you will receive an email with your score.

You can read more about the process of taking a quiz, and purchase your own, by visiting quiz.bcsp.org.

STS-Construction Now STSC Certification, ASP to Use New Blueprint in Second Quarter of 2015

With the implementation of the BCSP CMS in October, 2014, the Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) no longer offers a construction examination. That examination is now part of the process of achieving the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC), its own certification.

The Associate Safety Professional (ASP), which also became a certification with the launch of the CMS, underwent its regularly scheduled role delineation study in 2014 and will begin to use a new blueprint early in the second quarter of 2015. It remains a path to the Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
