Career Center: Summer Plans

Your student can make the most of his or her summer by setting up informational conversations. Starting with family friends is the easiest way to practice networking and gather career-related information. For helpful tips, direct your student to our  Networking & Informational Interviews Handout. Our Career Advisors are also available over the summer to meet, talk, or Skype with students to discuss networking and the career search process.

Does your student have summer 2014 plans? Encourage him or her to report summer plans by June 1 for a chance to win $100.

For more information, visit  careercenter.wustl.edu.

Student Health Services Put on Your List of Must Dos! Action Required

Student Health Services is happy to announce that United Healthcare Student Resources will be providing a robust student health insurance policy for all students.  This policy will be effective 8/1/2014.  All students will be included in this policy and charged for this policy.  There is a waiver process which allows a student to provide proof of adequate insurance coverage to waive out of the policy.  Students on a J1 or F1 Visa status are not permitted to waive the policy.  Students should monitor shs.wustl.edu for announcements about the health insurance policy and waiver process.  Action is required by students if they wish to waive out of the policy and avoid the charge for the health insurance.  Information will be available on July 1, 2014 at shs.wustl.edu about the policy and waiver process.

Over the next few weeks the Danforth University Center (DUC) will host high energy events created by students for students.  When classes end and exam time draws near, the DUC becomes study central offering countless spaces for students to study no matter what their academic style might be.  Late night study snacks will be served.

Through its innovative new grant program, "The DUC Presents" the Danforth University Center provides funds to student groups interested in developing new programs  So far there has been great success with 4 programs scheduled for this semester alone.  These include a collaborative storytelling/performance experience with local school children and upcoming bazaar.  The goal of the program is to ensure the availability of safe and substance free weekend entertainment options.  To learn more check out the DUC Facebook page

The DUC will also serve as the official study break space for Wash U. during reading week. We are planning three nights of great programming to help students as they prepare for a stressful week. Once the schedule is finalized we will have it posted on our website and facebook page.

It's a Great Time to be a Student Entrepreneur

Has your student ever

expressed an interest in hiring U Trucking to help them move out of a dorm room at the end of the school year?  What about requesting that they hire laundry services from Wash U Wash (to free up precious study time of course) or in room water cooler through Wydown Water?
These businesses are among 8 student owned and operated businesses in operation on campus through the Student Entrepreneurial Program (StEP).  Through StEP undergraduates from any field of study can undertake the real world experience of  creating and managing every aspect of a small business.  Last year a generous donation was made to StEP to provide loans to students interested in becoming a part of the program but were barred from doing so because of cost.  This year, second donor increased the loan fund and provided additional sums to create grants for the start of new businesses.  Does your undergrad have the next great idea for a new business?  Check out step.wustl.edu.
