Reed Geek
Even A Kid Can Do It
Using this simple tool really is easy enough for a kid to use. Probably the most common problems preventing a reed from responding properly is the back of the reed not being flat. Cane warps easily, and when the back of the reed is no longer flat it does not vibrate efficiently. For years many musicians have used reed resurfacing tools made of an abrasive sandpaper. In the 1980's and 90's when I worked with Mr. Gebhard Steuer at the Steuer Reed Factory in Lindau Germany, he often commented on his preference for reed rush over sand paper. The sand paper pushes cane dust into the open pores of the reed. Another friend of mine, saxophonist James Houlik mentioned to me once that he often used a reed knife to flatten the back of his reeds. Well now here it is a handy tool that fits in your pocket and is easy and safe to use. It will achieve terrific results for the most common reed problems. Now clarinetists, saxophonist, oboist, and bassoonists alike are able to make the many necessary adjustments to their reeds.
