It's the Weekly What? for Friday, November 9th
Thankful... for five dollar toaster ovens!!
Gobble gobble! In just a few more days we'll all take some time out from our busy lives to gather together with friends and family to give thanks for what we have in life. After that we'll all lounge around in a tryptophan-induced stupor and then arise early the next morning to mace entire crowds as we attempt to nab a $5 toaster oven. Ah, good times... good times. Hey, shopping is a full-contact sport. Don't like it? Then put down the buy-one-get-one-free super-stretch one-size-fits-all "Texting Gloves" and exit the building. Whew, sorry about sounding so aggressive but if you've spent any time in the Weekly What? cafeteria with the Writing Room monkeys you'd know where that sort of take-no-prisoners attitude comes from. So, where were we? Oh yes... After you've suffered through this week's newsletter, why don't you click over to our Facebook page and weigh in on this week's question? "What's the one food you're looking forward to on Thanksgiving?"
Note: There won't be a Weekly What? next week. We'll all be too full to write anything. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
Smell like sushi... really.
No... not raw fish. We're talking about the more delicate scent of freshly cooked rice plus hints of ginger and lemon. Just so you know "sushi" doesn't actually mean "raw fish" or fish anything. Sushi is actually the vinegared rice used in making the rolls you tend to think of when thinking of "sushi." "Sushi" is cool, but we'd rather have the "Brownie" scent thankyouverymuch.
Remember cassette tapes?
Yes, yes, vinyl is cool again, but if you're a child of the 80's the way you listened to your music was on a cassette tape (and if you were super awesome that tape was in a Sports Walkman). Does anyone even have any cassette tapes anymore? We know there's a few that we wish we could find since the music on them hasn't found its way into any digital music outlets. Lost and gone forever, we suppose. However, if you do have some cassette tapes laying around that you wish you could convert to a digital format (complete with hiss and distortion) you just have to check out this cassette-to-iPhone converter gizmo. Bonus: It also functions just like a Walkman! >>
Oh boy! Another Free For All Friday!
The good folks over at creativepro.com have done it again: They've rounded up a good selection of freebies and this time around it's a fabulously diverse mix of graphics apps, fonts, productivity apps, and other interesting and potentially useful stuff: the standout in this case is "Chromo Clock." It's a clock and calendar that combines color with date and time. What time is it? "Oh, it's half past magenta." >>

Tron's wine cellar
We're not sure which is cooler: the glowing racks and arches in the wine cellar or the transparent ceiling between it and the room above. Cheers, programs!>>
Sometimes the most fun things are the simplest...
Grab a couple of plain ceramic mugs and a pack of Sharpie pens (they're available in colors other than black!) and get to drawing on the mugs. Then bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. We've tried it here in the Weekly What? Test Labs (No monkeys were harmed in the process) and baking makes the drawings surprisingly durable! Hand washing is okay, but the article warns against running them through a dishwasher Sharpies: What can't they do, eh? >>
Pumpkin pumpkin pumpkin pumpkin pumpkin...
This time of year we're besieged with pumpkin-this and pumpkin that: milkshakes, smoothies, cakes, muffins, coffee drinks, candies, ad infinitum. So that's why this "Apple Pie Dip" is so awesome. Imagine this: a bowl of apple pie filling into which you dip buttery cinnamon and sugar encrusted chips. Yes please! Let's go to the kitchen! >>
Here's a little turkey prep help for you:
Getting your turkey ready can be a little tricky so here's some expert advice on prepping your bird for cooking. >>
