Riverstone International School
September 8, 2016
|

Hi All,
As our conversations have quickly turned from the start of school to our rafting and outdoor trips, I thought I would take a second to reflect on what I have seen over the last 16 years of watching these great excursions. The excitement that comes with these experiences throughout all of our divisions is visible everywhere at Riverstone.
This year, as our faculty gathered for our kick-off meeting we spoke of student wellness and happiness. Study after study has linked both of these factors with what occurs on our trips. Being surrounded by the beauty of the Payette River, or watching the sun set and the moon rise over the cliffs at the end of a Sawtooth lake, are images that not only last a lifetime but lend us a lens to look at all that we do differently. Nature allows us to better see our place in the world and gives our students an opportunity for awe.
As a college counselor, I have been blessed to read many of the essays written by our graduating seniors. Many write about Riverstone's Outdoor Education and what it means to them. Learning to work together through an unexpected snowstorm, coming together to fix a broken tent in the wind, thinking on the fly to navigate a lost trail, or unexpectedly emerging as a "leader by example" - these experiences forever change students and how they see themselves and their peers. Our students college essays reflect a moment of growth and newly found self-knowledge, which often comes from difficulty, failure, unfamiliarity, and risk taking. These are real and vital experiences that help shape our students into the young adults they are meant to be.
Our graduates leave here with a strong sense of place that has been nurtured through the years that they have grown in our Outdoor Education program. On their last night together on their final outdoor trip in the spring of their Senior year, Ben Brock has them share their favorite Riverstone outdoor stories. Some have become true outdoor experts, some outdoor appreciators; regardless, their comments about the richness that the beauty of Hells Canyon or Southern Utah or Eastern Idaho has brought to their lives is palpable and moving.
For our students, it starts on a raft as a youngster in a river bigger than imagination. Years later, they leave Riverstone after being put face-to-face each semester with (to steal from the Great Gatsby), "something commensurate with their own capacity for wonder."
All my best,
Bob Carignan Head of School

HOST FAMILY OPPORTUNITIES
|
We are looking for a host family who would be interested in hosting one of our current Grade 10 international students. Tommy is a one-year student on a J-1 visa and therefore is not eligible to live in the dorm. He is currently living with a temporary host family that is not part of our Riverstone community and it would be fantastic if we could find a Riverstone family that would like to welcome him for this year.
Tommy is a very fun, light-hearted, polite and active young man from South Korea. He writes: "Hello, my name is Sungwoo (Tommy). I am 15 year old that enjoys playing the piano, travel, and playing sports (soccer, basketball and baseball are my favorites). I also find it very interesting and intriguing to meet with people with different thoughts, which is why I came to study in the U.S. It has already been a great opportunity for me to share my own culture and communicate with different people and I am excited for the rest of the year at Riverstone and in Boise."
Please contact Jane Kaserman or Angie Day for more information.

Photo Directory - Send Family Photos!
The Parents' Association would like to create our 3rd Riverstone Photo Directory to compliment the school's student directory and help everyone get to know one another. In addition to names and contact information, we hope to have a photo of every family in the school!
To have your family's photo included, please send an email to Riverstonepa@riverstoneschool.org with the following:
- A family photo (1MB digital file)
- If your child lives in two households, please feel free to send two photos
- Landscape photos work best and they do not have to be formal - a family selfie is great, too!
We are excited about our third year of offering this and we look forward to seeing all of the beautiful (or entertaining) pictures of you and your families! If you have any questions, please contact Natalie Geffros.

A NOTE FROM OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS
|
The following is a note about homesickness from Andrea Kuenzli and Shirley O'Neil, our school counselors. Please share discuss this topic with your students as they prepare for their upcoming fall trip.
The fall trips are quickly approaching and this can have some students worried about spending time away from home.
Homesickness is a very normal emotion for people of all ages and is usually displayed through worried thoughts and feelings of loneliness or isolation. Luckily, there are some quick and simple techniques to work through it:
- Show your student pictures of where they are going and where they are sleeping before the trip. This helps to familiarize your child with their new setting.
- Have your student to pack something nostalgic that reminds them of home. It might be a stuffed animal, a picture, or a favorite book.
- Encourage them to share their feelings - it is completely normal to feel homesick and they should write those feelings down or share with a friend or trip leader with the intention of ending the conversation on a positive note.
- Pack your student favorite snack, or special treat, to look forward to during the trip.
- Remind them to focus on enjoying the adventure that they're on with their peers and on having fun!
If you have any questions or would like to know more about homesickness please email Andrea or Shirley, or drop by our office.
