Riverstone International School
May 26, 2016
Hi All,

I hope you all have the opportunity to join us at our unique graduation exercises today. We are launching a lovely, kind, and thoughtful group of students on the next leg of their journeys. Yesterday, we celebrated our new leadership in the school with our annual Middle and High School Awards Ceremony.

Each year at this time I am overwhelmed with a sense of the great work Riverstone does. We get a chance to have all of our constituents, parents, staff, students, and alumni celebrating the past and future of our school. We are proud of what we have done, and as each load of dirt is dug, we are excited for our future.

Please join me in Celebrating the Class of 2016!

NO SCHOOL NEXT MONDAY
american-flag-wavy.jpg Please remember that Riverstone International School will be closed next Monday, May 30 in honor of Memorial Day. This holiday is in remembrance of all those who died in the country's armed forces.

Please have a safe and relaxing weekend.
CLASS OF 2016 COMMENCEMENT - TODAY!
Commencement exercises will take place today, Thursday, May 26 at 4:00 PM in the Kennedy Gymnasium.

Graduation is another one of our unique-to-Riverstone events: each graduate will be spoken about by a teacher or staff member, and then will reflect on his or her time at Riverstone. The words spoken at this ceremony are truly incredible. We encourage families to join in the celebration of our graduates!

If you are posting to social media during the graduation, please use #riverstone2016 in your description so we can see all of your photos!

The 4th Annual Adventure Race Competition is almost upon us!

The Adventure Race will take place during the morning of Friday, May 27 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This unique relay race requires each student to participate in one of four legs: orienteering, balloon launching, biking, and climbing, as well as two whole group challenges.

The Elementary School will continue their tradition of a Fun Run and Field Day on the last day of school, Thursday, June 2 at 12:40 PM.

The festivities will be kicked off by the FUN RUN! Many students have been running, jogging, and skipping around the soccer fields to be able to qualify to participate in the Fun Run. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
jumping_schoolkids.jpg Due to ongoing construction and changes occurring on campus, we have decided to celebrate the end of the year a little differently for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Instead of the traditional all-school BBQ on Thursday, June 2, we will have all students (Preschool through High School), teachers and staff come together on the Riverstone lawn and look back on the last year during the last hour of the day from 2:30 PM - 3:05 PM. This short celebration will include teacher recognition for departing staff and an exciting year-end celebratory moment for each grade level.

There will be no after-care on the last day of school. Please plan accordingly to pick your child up at the end of the school day. Email Tarrah Elam or Kathleen Gilton with any questions.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Gr 5 Exhibition earlier this week. Congratulations to our 27 students for so wonderfully presenting their journeys leading up to the culminating event of the Primary Years Programme: the Exhibition. Over 8 weeks, the students worked in ten groups studying 10 real-world issues and completed 56 unique community-based action steps to positively impact our community.

Download the Class of 2023 Exhibition brochure here. You can also view the full video they created discussing their topics and additional steps they took for these projects at our YouTube channel. For more pictures of the event, visit the Riverstone Facebook page.

Please contact Stacey Walker or Trevor Lindsay with any questions.

It is critically important to complete these forms as soon as possible. Working with the most up-to-date information makes a world of difference and we certainly appreciate your help.

STUDENT NEWS
Maggie L (Gr 9) was chosen to run the 4x800 relay for Boise High School, despite missing the districts competition while she was on her Spring Trip backpacking in Utah.

The team took 2nd Place at the State competition and Maggie achieved a personal record of a 5:13 minute mile. Congratulations to Maggie and the Boise High running team!
FACULTY NEWS
Gr 4 teacher, Jennifer Smackey, received a full scholarship to attend The Sustainable Forestry Tour in northern Idaho this June. During the week-long seminar, Jennifer will be exploring the social, economic and ecological aspects of sustainable forestry practices through experiences designed by the natural resource professionals who care for forests.

She is excited to bring back information, resources and activities that will be used to supplement Gr 4's unit of inquiry, How the World Works.

Gr 5 teacher, Trevor Lindsay, has been selected to present at the 2016 International Baccalaureate Conference of the Americas July 14-17 in Toronto, Canada. The Conference of the Americas is the largest International Education conference in the western hemisphere and received an unprecedented number of proposals this year.

Trevor's session, "Extraordinary Inquiry: Creating a Successful Environment for Empowering Individualized Student-Driven Inquiry and Community-Based Action," will guide IB teachers and administrators in creating an inquiry-based model that empowers individual students to pursue deeper understanding of personally meaningful real-world issues and take community-based action to positively impact the world. The methodology developed at Riverstone by Trevor and Stacey Walker for our Gr 5 Exhibition process will be the basis for Trevor's presentation.
