Riverstone International School
April 14, 2016
|

Hi All, Thank you to all who attended "Meet the Seniors" on Tuesday! There is no better way to understand what happens when students complete a Riverstone education than when you hear it from the students themselves. Throughout Tuesday's event, it was obvious how prepared our students are to work in a collaborative and challenging world. One theme we heard throughout the event was that while our seniors valued so many of their shared experiences, they were encouraged and supported to develop their own interests and passions as well. Through hard work, reflection, and guidance, they each were inspired to take a special journey that was all theirs. Our mission is reflected in their comments and the actions that they have taken. I am always most proud of our school when I see first hand that our students have become the confident young adults they were meant to be. The next step for the Class of 2016 is to sit for the very challenging IB Diploma Programme exams during May. Students take an average of 15 exams covering all of their six subject areas except art (they submitted their portfolios earlier). These exams range from 1-3 hours and challenge students on everything that students have studied during the two-year Diploma Programme. I remember a student commenting after leaving the math exam, "These evil test making geniuses have made me use everything I ever learned! And sometimes in a single question!" As each test session is completed, our IB team will send the completed exams to examiners around the world who have been trained to ensure that each student - regardless of where they live - is held to the same high standard. As a result, student success is internationally measured; yes, our seniors are part of a select group of students globally. This year, we hope to share examples of the type of questions students face in different subjects. Parents can take part in a fun exercise to learn first-hand what a Riverstone education prepares students to accomplish. I dare you to try and pass! Another theme that was repeated on Tuesday was gratitude; for classmates, for our school and the education they have been afforded, for their parents who have invested in their child's education, and for their teachers who have mentored and guided them. The latter encompasses all of our staff - every teacher that students have had through the years has contributed to the success that our seniors are enjoying now. One teacher that has had such a longstanding impact on our students is third grade teacher, Sally Stewart. From the very beginning when we were founded as Hidden Springs Community School, Sally has prepared and nurtured students for what lies ahead. It is with great excitement and sadness that I announce her retirement at the end of this school year. Sally's wisdom, her kindness, her talent in the classroom, and her avid support of the Cal Bears is something that has impacted every student who she has taught. The memories that our students have of her are warm ones and we will enlist them to help us celebrate her final year. Sally is a longstanding part of a dedicated team of parents and teachers who dreamed of what we have become. This team hoped to create a world-class school that would prepare students for what lies ahead and she will retire knowing that she has been an integral part of our success story. Over the coming months, we will plan a celebration in Sally's honor and will keep you posted. Until then, please say thank you!
Call for anything,
Bob Carignan Head of School

DP EXAM VOLUNTEER PROCTORS NEEDED
|
The International Baccalaureate examinations are just around the corner. Riverstone's Seniors will take between 15-18 different examinations in their six core subjects as part of the requirements of the Diploma Programme (DP). Our Seniors will begin taking their end of course examinations on the Monday, May 2.
We need volunteers to proctor an exam or exams. This is a great opportunity to volunteer and gain insight into the level of knowledge and skill our Seniors have developed during their time at Riverstone.
A proctor's responsibilities include:
- Ensuring a quiet and orderly examination environment
- Supervising and making notes about start and stop times for examinations, noting irregularities and for making notes about anything germane to the examination session underway.
Andy, Robyn, Bob or Jami will be there to start and stop examinations and to secure the examination materials. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up here and contact Andy Johnson or Robyn Olnes with any questions. |
It's almost the end of the year for our students and we would love for you to keep these dates on your calendar to make sure you don't miss out on any of the end-of-the-year magic! Please email Kathleen Gilton with questions.

PERSONAL PROJECT EXHIBITION
|
Riverstone's Gr 10 class has completed their Personal Project, which is a key event in each Riverstone Sophomore's life and is a compulsory element of the Middle Years Programme (MYP). It also serves as a marker of each student's completion of the MYP.
Each Sophomore conceives, plans, researches and develops a project over the course of their Gr 10 year. This project is designed to exercise all of the learning skills a student develops over the course of their experiences in the MYP.
This year's Personal Project Exhibition will be held on Thursday, Apr 28 at 2:00 PM and again at 6:30 PM in the Kennedy Gymnasium.
Please plan to come and support the Sophomores as they share their work with the school community. See you there!

KHAN ACADEMY LEARNSTORM RESULTS
|
Led by the inspiring efforts of students throughout Gr 3-12, Riverstone showed its math might during the 9 week math competition, LearnStorm.
Despite competing against over 45,000 students and nearly 400 schools statewide, Riverstone placed 2nd, 8th and 13th as a school in three separate Cup competitions, and over 40 students ranked in the top 100 on grade-specific individual leaderboards, many more than once. Landing on the Leaderboards was no easy task: believe it or not 5 different students spent over 2,000 extra minutes working on math during the competition!
Congratulations to Audrey R, Yutaka G, Annie L, Kimberly S, Dev S, Parker B, Samantha S, Gabby M, Ethan E, Alexander S, Aidan S, Maggie L, Kana T, and Carly L for earning invitations from Khan Academy to represent Riverstone at the LearnStorm Final Event at Albertson's Stadium on Saturday, May 14. And congratulations to all of the participating students who displayed incredible mastery and hustle throughout the competition!

SENIOR TRIP TO CITY OF ROCKS RECAP
|
Please see a note below from Ben Brock, Outdoor Education Director and recent chaperone on the Class of 2016's last Riverstone Outdoor trip:
"Our Seniors enjoyed an incredible week of sunshine and rock climbing last week during their final Riverstone Outdoor Education trip of the year. The group spent four days rock climbing, hiking, and sleeping beneath the stars in the beautiful backcountry of Southern Idaho.
Living up to all of the expectations I've developed for the Class of 2016 through the years, they were positive, funny, helpful, willing, brave, and more. I along with fellow chaperones Josh Udesen, Samantha Cole, and Jon Moreno-Ramirez, were truly impressed (as was the crew from Sawtooth Mountain Guides). This group of students should be proud of what they have accomplished throughout their time in "the woods" on Riverstone trips; they are as prepared to hit whatever trails lay in front of them as any group of High School Seniors I've known.
I sincerely hope they'll keep me, and the rest of the teachers with whom they've explored the West, updated on the adventures that I know they'll have in the years to come... I present to you the Class of 2016 Outdoor Program Graduates!"

CLASS OF 2017 NORTHWEST COLLEGE TOUR RECAP
|
Please see a note below from Gretchen Arguedas, College Counselor and English teacher, about her recent trip with the Class of 2017 on their Northwest College Tour alongside Robyn Olnes:
"The Northwest College Tour is always the highlight of my spring! This year, we toured Whitman College in Walla Walla, Seattle University and University of Washington in Seattle, University of the Puget Sound in Tacoma, Linfield College in McMinnville and Lewis and Clark College in Portland. We experienced sunny skies, unseasonably warm temperatures, and the campuses were in full bloom. Students visited schools in rural settings as well as urban and suburban locations. They experienced small campuses as well as a university that is larger than many cities. Students explored areas around campuses and local communities to get a better feel for what life in a college town or larger city might entail. Most importantly, this trip served as a reminder that the application process is close at hand, and students envisioned themselves in college settings.
I'm always thankful for the opportunity to get to know students better, watch their reactions as they tour schools, and discuss their thoughts after this trip about their upcoming college decisions. I'm looking forward to working with the Class of 2017 over this next application cycle!"

A NOTE FROM OUR COUNSELORS
|
The following are notes on how to communicate with your children from Andrea Kuenzli and Shirley O'Neil, our school counselors.
Keeping Open Lines of Communication with your Kids:
Listen. Put down distractions and listen to your child when they speak to you. Give short responses, and head nods to show that you are listening.
Don't always problem solve. Sometimes your child just needs to talk and get their emotions out. Listen to them first, then ask how they think they could fix a situation.
Avoid asking too many questions. Some students need time after school to decompress. It can be overwhelming to be at school all day. Start with one question and see how talkative they are, or give them space until they're ready to talk.
Create opportunities to talk. Remove the distractions and create time for family dinners or walks. Spend one on one time with each of your child and create special time for each of them.
Be supportive and understanding. Encourage your child in their choices and decisions. Help them feel comfortable and not nervous when they talk with you. If you would like more information on how to communicate with your child, please stop by or contact Andrea or Shirley.

Next week's menu is listed below. If you haven't registered, it's easy and quick, and so is ordering. You can purchase meals for one day or an entire week, or month.
There are many meal options, so look through the entire spring menu here. If you are ordering pizza, please only select the number of slices you want to purchase. Please do not adjust the pizza size (small, regular, large) for your order.

This week's Facebook photo is of our Model UN team during their time in Oregon representing Riverstone this past week at the Regional Model UN Conference. Great job team!
