Riverstone International School
January 14, 2016
|
Hi All,
Riverstone has long been an institution that values diversity; this was one of our founding principles. Our classrooms and community become richer through the perspective and life experiences that a diverse population provides.
Through our financial program, we strive to enhance our diversity by making Riverstone affordable to families from differing socio-economic backgrounds. Currently, we provide financial aid that does not need to be repaid to approximately 20 percent of our families. We allocate nearly 10 percent of our operating budget to our financial aid program. We admit students need-blind, and make it a priority to provide financial options for mission-driven families so that their children may attend Riverstone. That being said, attending Riverstone is an investment in a child's future for all families; we appreciate all of our families' commitment to their child's education and the trust you place in our school.
When I meet people and the topic of Riverstone comes up, it often comes with the caveat, "I don't think private school can happen for my family." After talking further, I realize that parents are not aware of the options that we offer to make an excellent, private, and independent education attainable. We are fortunate to be able to offer not only traditional financial aid, but also Malone Family Foundation Scholarships and new this year, the Joe and Kathryn Albertson Foundation Scholarship.
When faced with the comment about not being able to afford private education, I now say, "Don't rule us out without finding out more." As current parents who are our best sources for referrals, it is important for you to know that we do our best to work with families to make Riverstone a reality. So please do not hesitate to use my line, "Don't rule us out," and encourage them to contact Rachel Pusch to learn more.
Applying for financial aid and scholarships is very straightforward and always confidential. The process starts with an application available on our website that should be completed in tandem with the admissions application. Riverstone does its best to ensure that if a family's financial situation stays the same throughout their years at Riverstone, then the financial aid amounts will remain similar.
Please read more about our financial aid process here and more about Malone Family Foundation Scholarships here. Applying by late January for the upcoming year is always best.
As our former Head Joe Kennedy would say, "Riverstone wants to be an elite school but never an elitist one." I wholeheartedly agree. As someone who was raised by a single mom who prioritized education, grants and financial aid made my private education a possibility through college. I will always champion this cause; it is yet another opportunity for our students to learn in a truly diverse tapestry.
Sincerely,
Bob Carignan Head of School

A note from High School Girls Basketball Coach Wally Bashaw: "The last few weeks have been pretty rough for the team having to play their first game of 2016 a day before school restarted after break. A few team members were missing and we lost 13-49 against Notus High School. We came back strong against Greenleaf High School at our first home game but still lost. The team revamped their defense and offense plays in a way that excited the crowd at their next game against Liberty that exhausted the competition. However, the outcome was not in our favor but this new style of playing impressed Liberty's coaching staff, saying that it was the most exciting game they had played all year and that Riverstone never stopped putting pressure on them."
A note from High School Boys Basketball Coach Eric Chapman:
"The team finished our non-league schedule with a winning record for the first time ever at 5-3. The team is now back to full strength after several boys recovered from injury or were out of town over the winter break. They worked hard in practice preparing for a challenging league schedule coming up in the next six weeks with a focus to improve our execution and concentration one game at a time.
We have started league play with a 1-1 record after a dominating home win over Greenleaf Friends Academy last Friday 59-24 in which junior Andres G scored a team record 15 points in the first quarter. This Tuesday, we lost our first home game of the season to perennial league power Liberty Charter School, but the squad competed hard before running out of gas in the fourth quarter. We have very balanced scoring with juniors Sam C, Dedi S, and Andres G all averaging in double figures through our first 10 games.
Our junior varsity squad despite a long break through December has now gotten into regular game action and captured their first victory of the season at home also against Greenleaf Friends Academy coming from behind in the second half. Leading scorers for our JV squad so far have been Orion B (Gr 9), Joshua H-K (Gr 10), and Thomas C (Gr 9).
An important week ahead with road games this Friday at Idaho City High School and next week against Rimrock and Wilder High Schools will be critical contests to position us in the standings. Please come out and support these boys and cheer the Otters to victory!"
