Riverstone International School
December 10, 2015
|
Hi All,
As I shared with everyone at Grandfriends Day yesterday, we are thrilled about the growth in our STEM program this year - the excitement among our students is palpable. What makes Riverstone so vital is that at the same time I can comment and praise our arts program.
As you know, we are committed to a strong arts program throughout your child's time at Riverstone. We do not look at these subjects as electives taught by volunteers; they are core classes taught by specialists at every grade level. The wonderful Winter Concert was just one of many examples; not only a lovely performance but also an academic exercise that highlighted what our students have learned throughout the semester.
Last night I saw the High School Theatre Arts production of "The Bad Seed" and it was fantastic. The ensemble worked hard and supported each other throughout the semester. They all learned about staging, sound, and creating and working around a set - they did it all. While our drama teacher oversaw the performance, a student directed it. For those students in the Diploma Programme, they will be asked to reflect on what went right and what other decisions they may have made.
Throughout our hallways, you see examples of our students art and we invite you to come in the spring to see the capstone achievement of our art program, the "Senior Art Show." In this case as well, students have had to approach their art as a true academic discipline. They must not only present and explain their body of work to parents and peers, but also to international evaluators. Additionally, our Spring Arts Show celebrates our music and art program on a school-wide basis.
In all cases, the academic importance of the arts and the value we place on it to create students with empathy, creativity, and confidence is a core value at Riverstone. As we saw with the inter-generational audience at our concert and with the international cast of our play, the arts celebrates, enriches, and embraces our shared humanity.
Sincerely,
Bob Carignan Head of School

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT HOSTING OPPORTUNITY
|
We have another fantastic opportunity for a family that would like to host a student for one semester. This young man has been in the US for a year and a half and has been at Riverstone since the beginning of this school year.
This young man has excellent English skills, enjoys family life, likes to cook, has made friends, is involved in school activities, and is an excellent student. If you have thought about hosting, but aren't sure if you want to commit to a year, this might be the perfect situation. The current host family would be happy to talk with you about the student. He will not be here for the Christmas holidays, but we would love to have a new home for him before he leaves for the break.
Please contact Jane Kaserman or Rachel Pusch for more information. |
Thank you to everyone who attended, assisted with and performed in the Variety Show last Friday!
Congratulations to Susan Tabb, our Riverstone Rock Star honoree this year. This award is given each year in recognition of an individual who has had significant and meaningful impact on our school community.
Among many other ways that she has supported the school, Susan has created the library as we know it, served as a room parent, chaperoned this year's Gr 6 trip to Yellowstone and more. She's always looking to make our students' experience in the library special. Thank you Susan!
We would also like to say a huge thanks to Damon Brown, Variety Show Director, as well as all of the students that worked to make this year's show so wonderful:

A NOTE FROM OUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR
|
Explaining the News to Your Child The following is a note from Andrea Kuenzli, our school counselor.
We thought that will all of the recent events that have been occurring around the world it would be beneficial to offer some advice when presenting the news to your kids.
Remind your kids that they are safe and reassure them of the resources in your community that help protect them. Your children are also very aware of your reactions to events - remember to stay calm.
Ages 7 and under -
Turn off the news when your child is present. The images on the television and newspaper could be frightening to them. Kids at this age have a hard time confusing facts with fantasies or fears.
-
Remind them that your family is safe. Tell them about all of the safety measures that you have.
-
Spend time together. Listen to your child's fears and then spend some time doing something fun with them.
Ages 7-12 -
Know your child's maturity level and ability to manage anxiety. If they tend to be more sensitive or anxious keep them away from violent TV news and use your own careful words to explain what is occurring.
-
At this age kids are developing their moral beliefs and often believe everything that they hear. Ask them about what they already know and understand.
-
Filter News- Be aware of how much news your child is exposed to and how graphic the images might be. This information might be coming from the radio, newspapers, magazines and televisions through out the house.
Ages 12 and older -
See what they already have heard - teens may have already heard information from their friends or through other sources. Be open to the ideas and beliefs that your teen is developing, but also share your thoughts.
-
Let them express themselves - teens might feel strongly about the events that are occurring. Let them find safe ways to express their thoughts, fears and emotions.
For more information on self-confidence or other social/emotional concerns please email our school counselors, Shirley O'Neil or Andrea Kuenzli, or stop by their office located in the Elementary School. |

Hats, coats, scarves, mittens, boots, etc. all help ensure our students are warm at morning and lunch recesses!

A note from Athletics Director, Demi Dlouhy regarding the High School Girls Basketball team: "The girls' basketball season started out in mid-November with a tough home game against Victory Charter. It was a rough night for Riverstone offensively but their defense was strong. With a change in the lineup at halftime after trailing by 6 points, the team shut down the Vipers and won the game 28-25.
Unfortunately, we lost our next games against Idaho City and
Horseshoe Bend. Coach Wally believes that the team is on the right track and excited about our defense. With more practice and experience coming on offense, we're excited that things should turn around soon."
And it did! The Otters won their game against Cascade High School earlier this week!
Check the school calendar for future games.
