Riverstone International School

Hi All,
As we near the final week of the Annual Fund, I'd like to highlight why these five weeks of fundraising and our annual Auction are so important. All gifts from both of these two important fundraisers go directly to our programs and allow us to say "yes" to making Riverstone a better place for all of our students.
Thanks to your generosity at last year's Auction during the Fund A Need portion of the evening, we were able to enhance our current science curriculum and implement new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs - a direct connection to the initiatives outlined in the Strategic Plan. We have used the funds to improve our science labs, purchase equipment, and provide training for our teachers.
Last summer, three Elementary School staff members -- James Hamilton-Vail, Jennifer Smackey and Tina Morgan -- attended a STEM-based Project Lead the Way training. Ms. Smackey and Mrs. Morgan then trained other members of our staff to implement the program in Grade 2 and Grade 5. This inquiry-based program, which we are integrating into our Units of Inquiry, is tested and proven to be very effective in getting students excited about STEM.
Check out this short video highlighting Grade 5 and how they have integrated their unit of inquiry on media with robotics. We will share photos of the other science improvements in the near future.
We also now have an after-school "white hat hacking" club which offers a complicated and advanced level view of computer coding. Thanks to parent Dejan Nenov for making this possible for our students!
We also received a matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation for $50,000 last year. As with any granting organization, they looked very closely at our 2014 Annual Fund participation. Their grant enabled us to purchase robotics equipment and computers necessary to introduce the robotics program that we are implementing in the Gr 9 Design Technology course. Our students are enjoying robotics so much that we have two robotics teams that are preparing for competition. We have been trying to raise matching funds outside of our parent community and are still in the process of doing so with a deadline of December 31, 2015. If you have any suggestions for potential organizations or individuals who would be interested in supporting STEM-education at Riverstone, please let me know.
Finally, thanks to the Parents' Association for planning a pre-holiday stress-reducer, "A Taste of Riverstone." I hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Bob Carignan Head of School

NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
|
The following is a note from Andrea Kuenzli, our school counselor. Healthy levels of self-confidence can set your child up to be successful against stressors later in life. Self-confidence can help you to better understand your strengths and abilities, face difficulties and overcome obstacles. Here are a few ways that you can help your child develop a healthy self-confidence.
Recognize Strengths
Help your child feel special and valuable by giving them compliments and recognizing their individual strengths and differences.
One-on-One Time
Spend 15 minutes of uninterrupted one-on-one time with your child per day.
Developing Decision-Making Skills
When your child comes to you with a problem or issue, focus on creating a solution together. Then talk about possible outcomes.
Stay Positive
Don't compare them to others. Focus on what your child can do and what is appropriate for them and their level.
Provide Choices
It might be as simple as option 1 or option 2 for dinner, but by doing so you are giving your child the power to choose.
Recognize Accomplishments
Praise them for their accomplishments after finishing a big test or competition.
For more information on self-confidence or other social/emotional concerns please email our school counselors, Shirley O'Neil or Andrea Kuenzli, or stop by their office located in the Elementary School.

FRIDAY MORNING MUSIC: CALL FOR MUSICIANS

Friday Morning Music takes place from 7:45 AM - 8:20 AM in the Elementary School Atrium once per month. Our next event is Friday, Nov 20.
If your child would like to perform on November 20 or other Friday Morning Music events, please email Nicole Golay or Damon Brown for more information.

High School Soccer - Rush Fall Classic
A note from Coach Stilinovich:
"Great season by our High School Co-Ed team this fall. The team finished in 2nd place. Not the exact finish we wanted, but it was still awesome. I was really impressed how all the players improved week by week. They continued to try and be the best that they could be. Can't wait for our spring season!!"

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL
|
A note from Coach Lacie Barker:
"This week, the Riverstone Middle School Girls basketball teams were on the road. After two wins on Tuesday afternoon against Horseshoe Bend, both teams are excited to take on Garden Valley.
Next week's games will be played at Riverstone vs. Compass Honor School on Tuesday, Nov 17 and vs. Idaho City on Thursday, Nov 19. We would love if you could come cheer us on! Games start at 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM."

Grade 5 students frequent the Boise Art Museum once a year with Art teacher, Mr. Nelson.
Our connection to the Museum is an essential part of the Art program and this year, three students from Grade 5 were selected to exhibit artwork at the National Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The exhibit is held every year and museums around the country that have educational outreach programs are invited to participate.
Congratulations to Mac W, Darci D, and Cora I (all Gr 5) for being selected to participate!

WINTER WEATHER CANCELLATIONS
|
How do you know if Riverstone is closed due to winter weather? Our policy is as follows: - Riverstone will be closed if the Boise School District closes district-wide.
- In cases where only certain schools in the Boise School District are closed, Riverstone's administration will decide whether to cancel school on a case-by-case basis.
Please remember that if you believe it is too dangerous for your children to travel to school, you have the option to delay arrival time or keep your children home. Please notify the school as you would with any late arrival or absence. If school is cancelled, there are no after school activities or athletics practices/games on that day.

This week's Facebook photo of the week is of our very own Riverstone veteran, Middle and High School Director, Andy Johnson, on the day he finished basic training in 1983. Thankful to celebrate Andy and our other Riverstone community members who are either currently serving or have served - you are truly making the world a better place! Keep an eye on Riverstone's Facebook page and Instagram to keep up with what's happening at Riverstone!
