Hi All,
Well, sadly as the father of a senior, college counseling is getting back into full swing here at Riverstone. This is also true for our juniors, who will spend time this fall with the many college representatives who visit Riverstone.
While our seniors will be working closely with our College Counseling Director to line up test dates, complete essays, finalize application lists, and secure recommendations, our juniors will be getting their first real look at how the college admissions process works.
We require that all of our juniors attend the college information presentations held at Riverstone because we believe - and have years of experience to back it up - that creating the right list of schools to apply to is one of the most important parts to our process. We are fortunate to have a wide network of schools that we have built wonderful relationships with who take the time to meet our students. The admissions counselors from these colleges help students understand the importance of considering location, size, academic focus, student organizations, internships, and many other factors that influence our students' selection process. These meetings are a great advantage for all, as it is just as important to eliminate schools as it is to add them. In the spring, the College Counseling trip allows juniors to test out their theories first hand.
We are very fortunate to have Gretchen Arguedas as our College Counseling Director. She has the perfect skill set for the job: she has extensive knowledge of schools and is a gifted writer and a brilliant editor. She guides our seniors through the revision process so the essays that they ultimately submit maintain their voice. It is paramount that college essays do not sound like a consultant or parent wrote them; those essays are easy to spot for admissions officers. This past summer, Gretchen was selected to participate in Middlebury College's prestigious Bread Loaf Writers Conference. Co-founded by Robert Frost, the conference has been called by the New Yorker, "the oldest and most prestigious writers' conference in the country." After her summer in Vermont, she is more ready than ever to work with our students!
We love talking about the college process - please knock on her door (or mine) if you have any questions!

Join us at our meeting on Thursday, Sept 17
The Parents' Association is looking for fresh ideas to bring our school community together and your participation is critical to making this happen. Our monthly meetings are held in the school library on the first Thursday of each month.
Our first meeting of the school year will be Thursday, September 17 and starts at 8:45 AM. Coffee, tea, and breakfast treats are provided. Contact Natalie Geffros with questions.
Please contribute to the Parents' Association Fund
The simplest way to lend your support is by contributing to the Parents' Association Fund. These funds allow us to do even more for students, teachers, and staff. Funds benefit classroom and grade specific social gatherings, as well as support our Merci Program. Funds donated last year also allowed us to give the entire staff a holiday and end of the year thank you gift.
This year, we are reducing the per student request to $25; but we are looking for strong support in order to make this permanent.
You can download the PA Funds Contribution Form and return your form and contribution to the Elementary School front desk. Thank you!
Final call for photos for the Photo Directory
The Parents' Association would like to create our 2nd Riverstone Photo Directory to compliment the school's student directory and help everyone get to know one another. In addition to names and contact information, we hope to have a photo of every family in the school!
To have your family's photo included, please send an email to Riverstonepa@riverstoneschool.org with the following:
- A family photo (1MB digital file)
- If your child lives in two households, please feel free to send two photos
If you have any questions, please contact Treacy Liebich.

POLICY HIGHLIGHT: ATTENDANCE
|
Our experience has shown that attending classes daily is one of the most important factors of being a successful student in the IB programmes. Students should arrive on time with all the necessary supplies and be prepared to participate. If a student has repeated absences or tardies, the Division Director will work closely with the student and his or her parents to rectify the problem.
If your student will be absent, please notify the school. Parents must sign in students who are arriving late or sign out students who are leaving prior to the end of the school day. -
Elementary parents should use the sign out sheets that are located by the Elementary School Director's office
-
Middle and High School students should be signed out on the clipboard by Kathleen Gilton's office in the Middle School

OUTDOOR FALL TRIPS & RAFTING
|
As they say, pictures are worth a 1000 words. If you'd like to see what our students experience during fall trips and rafting adventures, please check out our photos on the Riverstone Facebook page and Instagram.
Thank you to the students, teachers, and parents who have shared photos.
We will be adding video in the next few weeks as well. Stay tuned!

A note from our librarian, Susan Tabb:
At the beginning of each school year, Riverstone creates a giant book worm made up of all of the titles of books that were read over the summer. If you - whether you are a student, parent, or sibling -- read or listened to a book between June 1 and Labor Day, it counts.
Please send in your list and paper strips or you can document your books on the online community reading log here.
Please contact Susan Tabb via email if you have any questions.

We like to share what our students are up to outside of their school day. Please send information that you'd like to share to Kathleen Gilton.
Alex A (Gr 4) and her cousin teamed up to place 3rd in their age group in the Kids Adventure Games in Sun Valley this past weekend! The races emphasize teamwork, problem solving, sportsmanship, environmental awareness and fun. Judging by the photos, the course was challenging! Noah B-F (Gr 12) was featured in a recently-released BeTheParents.org video. BeTheParents is an organization spreading the message to teens and their parents to make it a priority to remain connected. Their mission is to help kids be successful and to avoid many of the pitfalls that teens often find themselves stumbling into unintentionally. Watch Noah's video, Find Your Passion, below.
