Riverstone International School
July 30, 2015
|
Hello All,
It is hard to imagine that we are looking at the last few days of July, but we are busy getting ready for next year. Supplies are arriving regularly, maintenance and repairs are being done, our new website is being developed, and the Administrative team is planning carefully to ensure that 2015-16 will be the best year ever. As we believe, each year needs to be better than the last and we are proud to have this in our DNA.
We're thrilled that we have received a steady stream of graduates, new and old, who have stopped by to fill us in on their lives and reconnect with us. Recently we were visited by one of our early graduates, Otgon, who came from Mongolia. She was a contortionist in her youth and many of you will never forget her performances at our Variety Shows! She is now a lovely young woman who is on an executive track with Caterpillar Corporation in Mongolia. She was so poised and smart, and she couldn't stop talking about how much Riverstone mattered in her life, and still does.
It has been impossible to keep track of the many places that our students are visiting this summer. It is wonderful to see an active representation of their curiosity and willingness to take responsibility and believe in themselves while traveling. They have worked hard inside and outside of our classrooms developing a sense of who they are and they are willing to literally share that with the world.
Yes, while I enjoy the summer and how much I can get done, it is never the same without having your children here - I would never take this job without them!
Make the most of what's left.

ONE MORE STUDENT TO PLACE
|

Katharina is hoping to attend Riverstone this year. She has named Riverstone as her first choice and we would love to have her here. Katharina is 15 years old and is from Germany. She is a member of the volleyball club, likes computers, cooking, listening to music and meeting friends.
If you or someone you know is interested in hosting Katharina, please contact our International Student Coordinator, Jane Kaserman.
The following is a letter from Katharina to her future host family:
My name is Katharina and I am from Germany. I am a sportive and spontaneous person. I really like to organize different projects and events for school. My parents say I am very responsible and polite. I am very much interested in volleyball, rafting, and any activities in the water and out in the nature in general. Besides sports I enjoy spending time with my friends, watching movies, and reading books. My family is very active and we are always on the move! My parents go jogging three times a week, and we go to parks very often, as well as we attend sporting events. Our family thing is to go to basketball and ice hockey competitions.
The USA fascinates me, it is a many sided country with a colorful landscape and many different people. In Europe we always hear about an American way of life and most of the children heard about school spirit, and I would like to see it for myself. I would like to have a chance to be a part of it and experience everything the USA has to offer with my host family.

Demi Dlouhy is our Elementary School PE teacher and school Athletic Director. She wanted to share information about Riverstone's growing athletic program.
If your student is interested in joining a Riverstone athletic team, please:
- Review the required forms that your child will need to participate prior to attending their first practice (see below)
- Contact the appropriate coach to express an interest in getting involved
If you have questions regarding Riverstone's athletic program, please email Demi Dlouhy. Go Otters!
Athletic Philosophy The athletic program at Riverstone International School is an integral part of the educational process. Athletics offer a positive and meaningful experience that will enhance the growth and development of all young men and women who participate. The Athletic Department at Riverstone International School offers eight interscholastic sport teams for those students who have interest and have an appropriate attitude for their respective sports. No-Cut Policy Riverstone adheres to a "no-cut" policy for sports. Because of the strong value of sports participation, we feel all students should have the opportunity to participate regardless of skill level. As a result of this policy, teams may consist of members whose abilities vary considerably. We hope our students will see this as a positive opportunity to help one another. Team Tryouts and Selection During the tryout period, each coach will provide an explanation of his/her expectations. It is the duty of the student to demonstrate to the coach that they can fulfill these expectations. The main reason the tryouts are in place is for the coach to correctly evaluate all students participating and accurately assign them to a team with students who have a similar skill set.

This week's Facebook photo of the week features Ben Brock, our Director of Outdoor Education, just beaming at the thought of making yummy salsa with these fresh-from-the-garden ingredients! Our garden has been fueled by compost from our worms and water from the high school cistern! Now...just need to wait for the tomatoes to ripen!
Keep an eye on Riverstone's Facebook page and Instagam to keep up with what's happening at Riverstone!
