Hi All,
Happy Fourth of July weekend! I just got back into town after having the pleasure of spending time at the Malone School's Conference at Stanford and attending the final two Grateful Dead shows in California - they end their 50 year career in Chicago this weekend. Next week, I would like to share some observations on both events and what I learned at each one - wisdom is everywhere. I wish you a great family weekend, enjoy this quintessential celebration of America, and keep the dogs safe!

Head of School

The Riverstone Orienteering team was busy bringing home the hardware last weekend at the Western States Orienteering Championships.
The three-day event, held once a year in locations around the west, consisted of a Sprint event on Friday, an Ultralong event on Saturday and a Middle Distance event on Sunday. Saturday's Ultralong event doubled as the US Ultralong Nationals and attracted some of the top orienteerers in the country, including the men's and women's national champions!
Despite the triple-digit temps, Riverstone Orienteerers strung together a series of pace-setting performances:
Western States medals went to Taavi Z (Gr 7), Ethan T (Gr 11), Zach C (Gr 12), Natalie P (Gr 12) and Levi S (Class of 2015).
US Ultralong National Titles went to Taavi Z (Gr 7), Zoe P (Gr 8) and Avery P (Gr 9).
Brian B (Class of 2015) and Ben M (Gr 11) also competed and just missed medalling.
Congratulations Otter Orienteerers!!!

Rising seniors Ben M, and his classmates Carter G and Becca T, recently returned from a three-day "Capstone" backpacking trip in the Sawtooth Mountains as the conclusion of Ben's participation in the Riverstone Outdoor Leadership Program.
The entirely student-planned trip was an opportunity for Ben to demonstrate his ability to design a backpacking trip from the ground up; he designed the itinerary and the safety and communication plan and assembled gear. Together, they built the menu and shopped for the food...and then executed the three-day Toxoway-Alice Loop in the Sawtooths to perfection. While they were shadowed in the field from a distance by teachers Jami Whitmer and Samantha Cole, and checked in with Outdoor Program Director Ben Brock via sat phone as agreed upon, the students were solely responsible for their decisions. The verdict? At the ripe old age of 17, they're fully capable of hitting the mountains on their own!
Students may apply to the Outdoor Leadership Program as they enter Grade 9. Over the course of three and half years, students will become Wilderness First Aid Certified, assist with preparations for, and then help lead, various school trips, and focus in a specific outdoor discipline (climbing, backcountry skiing or kayaking/rafting). Interested in learning more? Contact Outdoor Program Director Ben Brock.

Riverstone students tackle all sorts of inclement conditions while in the outdoors. Recently, rising seniors Cat C, Carly L, Sarah B, and Berkly M completed a wet and drizzly 13 mile day hike to Trail Creeks Lake while camping at the Grand Jean campground. And as you can tell by the photo, despite the conditions, they had a great time!

Congratulations to Mikayla R (rising senior) for placing first in the Under-20 age group and 24th overall in the Sun Valley Half Marathon! It was Mikayla's first competitive race and her first half-marathon. Wow! We enjoy sharing student news. Please send information that you'd like to share to Kathleen Gilton.

We have a couple of students who would really like to attend Riverstone next year. Think about how exciting it must be for these students when they find out they have been accepted to the school of their choice in the U.S. Please consider hosting a student next year.
Alejandro is a boy from Spain who would be joining Grade 11. He is an outdoor enthusiast. His parents are both teachers and he has one sister. Alejandro would like to come to school at Riverstone.
Katharina is a girl from Germany who would be joining Grade 10. She loves the outdoors and looks forward to enjoying outdoor experiences both with school and with her host family. She is trilingual and would love to have the chance to practice her English while at Riverstone.
If you have an interest in a student from a specific country, please contact Jane Kaserman, our International Student Coordinator, and she will do her best to find the perfect student for your family.
