Riverstone International School
May 30, 2015

Hi All,

This past week was full of wonderful events with our students taking front and center stage.

Our Grade 5 students celebrated the end of the Primary Years Programme with their Exhibition presentation on Tuesday evening. Numerous times I heard parents say, "I can't believe the composure of these 5th graders as they speak in front of a room full of people! I never could have done that at their age!" Please be sure to read the Exhibition brochure and watch their videos to gain a sense of their commitment to taking action on community-based issues.

The Senior Dessert was Wednesday evening. Ms. Fitz and Fitz' Five -- our five seniors who have attended Riverstone since Kindergarten -- took us back in time with some auspicious quotes from their Kindergarten days. Alumni, siblings, and parents shared stories, a little ribbing, and lots of love for our soon-to-be graduates.

Commencement exercises were once again a highlight of my year. We had families from Germany, Vietnam, China, and France with us, as well as family and friends from around the country. The close student-teacher relationships -- and how much they matter to a student's success and confidence in taking their next steps -- were so very clear. It reminded me yet again of how incredibly proud I am of our students and staff.

Please join us at our All-School BBQ on Thursday, the last day of school. More information is below. We have invited new families whose students will be attending Riverstone in the fall. Should you see a new face, please extend a warm welcome!

Call for anything,

FIELD DAY VOLUNTEERS & CANOPIES
The Elementary School will continue their tradition of a Fun Run with Field Day (with an international flair) on the last day of school: Thursday, June 4.

The festivities will be kicked off by the FUN RUN! Many students have been running, jogging, and skipping around the soccer fields to be able to qualify to participate in the Fun Run. The qualifying students will be running through a fun and exciting course with fellow classmates, faculty, staff, and parents cheering them on!!

We Need Help from Parents:
  • We need volunteers in order to hold this event
  • We need a couple of canopies to shade the sun
The Elementary School Olympic Field Day & Fun Run will take place on Thursday, June 4. Opening ceremonies start at 1:30 PM on the Riverstone Field.

Please contact Demi Dlouhy to volunteer or share your canopy. Thank you!
NAME THE OTTER
It's time to name our otter mascot! And we would like your help with ideas!

Please email Kathleen Gilton or drop off a note at the Elementary School or Middle School front desks with your suggestion for our otter's name, as well as your name and grade. Parents are welcome to submit ideas too!

Please turn in ideas by the last day of school, June 4.

We will announce the Otter's official name at our Convocation on the first day of school: Monday, August 31 at 9:00 AM.
HOSTS STILL NEEDED

World Flags As we come to the end of this year, we are still looking for a couple of host families for students who would love to attend Riverstone.

Bringing in students with diverse backgrounds is just one way that we help broaden our students' international understanding. We would love to accept these both of these students, but must have confirmed host families before that is possible.

If you or someone you know is interested in hosting one of these students, please contact Jane Kaserman.

Alejandro is a boy entering Gr 11 from Spain who loves sports, being outside, and going to soccer games. His parents are both teachers and he has one sister. He would like to try American sports like football or baseball. He is looking forward to his year as an exchange student in the United States with a a host family.

Katharina is a girl entering Gr 10 from Germany who enjoys volleyball, being outdoors, and cooking. Her German family is very active and likes to go to ice hockey and basketball games. Katharina speaks German, French, and English. She would like to go rafting and looks forward to experiencing school spirit.

EXHIBITION
Gr 5 Move Up Ceremony
The Grade 5 Move-Up ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 9:00 AM in the Kennedy Gymnasium.

Please join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of these students and wish them well as they transition in Middle School.  All are welcome to attend.

Gr 5 Exhibition
Congratulations to our 26 Grade 5 students for so wonderfully presenting their journeys leading up to the culminating event of the Primary Years Programme, the Exhibition. Over 8 weeks, the students worked in eleven groups studying 10 real-world issues and completed 83(!) unique community-based action steps to positively impact our community.

Please contact Stacey Walker or Trevor Lindsay with questions.
3RD ANNUAL RIVERCAMPS ADVENTURE RACE
The Clearwater Advisory group vanquished the competition and took the coveted "trophy" home after Friday's 3rd Annual Adventure Race Competition! This is the second time the Clearwater Advisory group has won in the first three years of this event.

This unique relay race requires each student to participate in one of five legs: kayaking, orienteering, kite flying, biking, and climbing, as well as two whole group challenges.

This fun competition encourages students to work together, cheer each other on, and builds community.

Photos will be posted this weekend on Riverstone's Facebook page and Instagram. Check them out!
SOCIAL MEDIA
View on InstagramRiverstone is expanding its social media to include Instagram! The content will be geared more towards our High School students and alumni, but we encourage parents to follow us too.

Two High School students will be providing daily photos and updates on what's happening around the school -- with guidance from school staff. We hope this is a great opportunity for our students to learn marketing skills while we get to see our students' perspective.

Check out riverstone_intl_school the next time you are on Instagram!

Just a reminder to follow our Riverstone Facebook page, YouTube account, school blog, and Flickr account.

Feel free to share posts or videos onto your personal pages -- help us share the Riverstone story! (Please note we do not tag students in photos for privacy reasons.)

Please contact Kathleen Gilton with any questions.
SCHOOL FORMS
When parents re-enrolled their children for the coming school year, there was a checklist of forms that also needed to be completed. This year, we need all parent information and forms (including copies of immunization records) submitted and uploaded into SchoolAdmin no later than May 30, 2015.

We have had improvement from last week -- we now have 85% of our families with completed forms. Only 15% of our families left to go! Thank you!

It is critically important for staff efficiency to complete the forms on the checklist as soon as possible so we can work over the summer months with the most up-to-date information. This makes a world of difference for us and we certainly appreciate your help.

Log into SchoolAdmin here to complete your school forms. Please contact Lisa Armstrong with any questions.
PLEASE RETURN LIBRARY BOOKS
Stack of Books School is ending and all of the books need to be returned to the library.  Please check around your homes, cars, etc. for any Riverstone School library book (there will be a Riverstone barcode on the back of the book).

We are also missing many books altogether. If you have seen any of the following books with a Riverstone barcode around your house, please return them to the library.  Click here for a list with images of the book covers.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES & CAMPS
Don't miss an opportunity to get your child involved in fun activities at Riverstone this summer.

Our summer camps take place starting in June through August and are filling up, so be sure to get your child enrolled.

All camps at Riverstone are open to the community, so invite a friend or family member to join the fun.

Download an updated listing of Summer Activities & Camps here.
STUDENT NEWS
We enjoy sharing what our students are up to outside of school! If you have news to share, please email Kathleen Gilton.

Olivia Congratulations to Olivia DeA (Gr 8) who after auditioning was selected for the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BYPO) to play bass next year! Through rehearsals with Conductor Deanna Tham and coachings from principal players of the Boise Philharmonic, the BPYO provides professional training opportunities to its members. The orchestra performs three concerts per year, with programs selected to broaden these young musicians' fluency with the enduring masterworks of the standard orchestral repertoire.

Well done, Olivia!
