Riverstone International School Newsletter
March 6, 2014

Hi All,
On behalf of our students and staff, thank you for your generous support at our auction, a Rock'n Rollin' Evening. The costumes (and wigs!) were fantastic, the event organization was superb, and everyone had a great time. Thank you again to our auction co-chairs, Mary Jane Murphy and Amy Bava, and their committee for making this event special.
As I noted previously, this year we used teacher input to identify our Fund A Need priorities. The campaign, It's a Beautiful Day, raised funds specifically for a new preschool and pre-kindergarten playground, a second outside basketball court, and computers and technology for our teachers. To learn more, please watch our Fund A Need video here.
We were honored and thrilled by your generosity when we raised $60,550 for the Fund A Need. If you did not attend the auction but would still like to contribute, every additional $1000 means we can purchase another computer for a teacher and $700 translates to a new projector. One hundred percent of contributions to our Fund A Need are tax deductible. Please contribute by emailing our Business Director, Kevin Richmond.
With the opportunity to sign up for a few more items below, and expenses still being submitted, net proceeds have not been calculated yet but we cannot say thank you enough for being generous and celebrating our school.
On a different topic, in February, Riverstone's Grade 10 students participated in a pilot science assessment developed by the Australian Council of Educational Research. This is the same company that developed the International School's Assessment (ISA) tests that our Grades 3, 7 and 9 take each year in reading, writing, and mathematics. These standardized tests are correlated with internationally recognized PISA standards. Our students have typically performed very well on these exams.
We are pleased to share that Riverstone's average score on the Grade 10 ISA Science test exceeded the average score for all students taking the test (727 RIS versus 646 Mean Score). The average PISA Science score is 500. Parents of Grade 10 students will be receiving their individual scores in the next few days.
We have put a great deal of effort into strengthening our progression of science classes from Middle to High School through the Math and Science Initiative and will continue to use the results from this test and other assessments to enhance our science program. The outstanding results from this recent test is a testament to our teachers and our students ability to compete globally while learning locally.
To learn more about the ISA and schools that utilize the ISA tests, visit acer.edu.au/tests/isa
Once again, we want our school to be the best by any measure that supports our mission.
Call for anything,
Bob Carignan

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU
|
Thank you for your amazing response to the initial survey for the strategic planning process - 139 parents participated! The committee has been reviewing the results and has identified five areas that we feel represent the key strategic priorities that should be addressed in the 2014-19 Strategic Plan.
Next week, we invite all parents to join us to provide additional input as members of the committee present the results of the survey and these priorities.
Join us for whichever meeting works with your schedule. Feel free to contact Strategic Planning Committee members Michele Drolet, Amy Duque, or Kipp Martell with questions.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY RESULTS
|
Twenty-eight students from Riverstone International School qualified to advance to the state National History Day in Idaho competition that will take place on Saturday, April 12. Students qualified by placing first or second in their respective categories at the regional competition that took place this past Saturday, March 1, 2014.
An additional 23 Riverstone students received recognition in 3rd or 4th place. The regional competition included 397 participants and was held at Lowell Scott Middle School. The Idaho State Historical Society coordinates these competitions.
Please look to the bottom of the newsletter for a complete list of students who received awards. Congratulations!!!
If your child will be competing in the State National History Day competition, please consider volunteering to judge, and please be sure to register your child for the State competition. The Regional competition needed almost 90 judges to be successful. The State competition has similar needs. Please consider volunteering! Contact Susan Dittus at Susan.Dittus@ishs.idaho.gov to volunteer.
Registration for the state competition must be complete by 11:59 PM on March 28. Historical papers must be at the Idaho Historical Society by 5:00 PM on the March 28. Historical websites will be "locked" on the 28th when registration closes. Your child can change anything on the project except the title and category in which they are competing.
Please contact Stacey Walker (Gr 5), Kendra Dixon (Gr 5), Tom Dempsey (Gr 6-8), Israel Carr (Gr 9-10) and Andy Johnson (General) if you have questions about registration for the State competition or if your child needs some advice on readying their project for the State competition.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MICROWAVES
|
The Elementary School microwaves are proving to be very popular during these cold months and the lines to use them are long. And more and more often, children are bringing in items that require 3-4 minutes of microwave time.
If you are sending your child with lunch that needs to be heated up, please look for items that may be warmed in approximately one minute.
This will ensure that everyone has a chance to warm up their lunch and have adequate time to enjoy it. We appreciate your cooperation!

HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IN 2014-2015
|
Many of our families have hosted several students over the years and continue their friendships long after the student has returned home or gone to college. Whether your kids are younger or older, everyone benefits from learning together about each other's cultures.
Please consider including the following student as part of your family next year!
Tianrun L - a student from China entering Grade 10 this fall Tianrun (or Sky, as he prefers to be known) lives in Xi'an, China and is keen to come to America to study. He knows about Riverstone through his family, who live in Idaho Falls. Sky's English level is high, and he currently attends a school that offers the AP curriculum. He cites his favorite subjects as physics and math. He loves to play badminton, soccer and chess, and likes all kinds of music. When asked what he thought would be a great way to integrate with a new host family, he said he would like to learn how to cook American food and would enjoy helping out in the kitchen to share Chinese cuisine. He is eager to learn to ski and to participate in the school's outdoor program. Camping sounds like a great new adventure to him. Sky's teachers indicate that he is a very hard worker, is honest, reliable, and charming.
Hugo S - a student from France in Grade 11 this fall
Hugo is a 16 year old male from a western coastal town in France, who has chosen Reiverstone for his year abroad. Hugo comes to us from ASSE, a company with whom we have worked for many years. Hugo enjoys tennis, skiing, running and sailing, and also video games and art history. Ultimately, Hugo hopes to have a career in design and is fond of drawing, painting and design. Hugo has 3 siblings and several step-siblings. He says that he would like to see the American's way of life and to perfect his English to become completely fluent, although his English proficiency is already quite high.
Please contact Rachel Pusch, Director of Admissions and Institutional Advancement, or Jane Kaserman, our ELL teacher and International Student Coordinator, for more information! |
WINTER ACTIVITIES WRAP UP
|
Winter Activities officially wrapped up last Friday when Grade 8 returned from their 3-day trip to the Idaho City Yurts. "Unofficially" however, the Kindergarten and Grade 1 have a make-up Learn to Skate session on Friday and students from the Outdoor Leadership Program still have a backcountry skiing trip in the Sawtooths over Spring Break.
As one might recall, this winter activity season has been one of "feast or famine;" early Elementary School trips to Bogus Basin found students snowshoeing and nordic skiing through dirt patches, followed by a snow day that, ironically, forced the cancellation of Grade 6 & 7 ski & snowboarding lessons, and more recently the Senior Trip was postponed in part due to significant snowfall in the Sawtooths (read "close to 10ft of snow in a couple weeks"). Additionally, as timing would have it, the Grade 10 Winter Camping Trip turned into the Grade 10 Yurt Trip as 24 hours of nearly constant rain at Bogus Basin made it impossible to construct snowcaves.
Through it all, however, Riverstone students have made the most of the Winter of 2014; collectively they are better prepared to stay warm and dry, they understand how animals and plants in Idaho adapt to winter, they have built and slept in snowcaves, they can identify layers in the snowpack that are prone to cause avalanches, and much, much more. Thanks to all who helped make it possible, from the parents who made sure students were dressed for the cold or helped chaperone a trip, to the teachers who made sure no one got too cold or wet, to the students who, with smiling faces, tromped out into the woods, rain or snow or shine!

Our High School Science Bowl team competed at Boise State University this past Monday, March 1. As a young team, they faced stiff competition but came away with several wins in the competition. They are looking forward to returning next year with more knowledge and more experience under their belts. Congrats to all of our competitors!

MARCH LUNCH ORDERS WERE DUE FEB 24
|
March lunch forms were due on Monday, February 24. Your child may start lunch on a delayed schedule if you missed the due date.

The Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure", slated for Saturday, May 10 this year, is a 5K run whose proceeds support breast cancer care in our community, including services such as mammograms for women who cannot afford them.
Riverstone parents and students who'd like to get out for a fun run and support the cause can register for Riverstone's team, "Otters for the Cure." Note that the "Non-Competitive" options are cheaper than the competitive ones.
If you are interested and have questions, please contact either Lisa Hecht or Caroline Sobota.
