Riverstone International School Newsletter
September 26, 2013

Hi All,

As I mentioned several weeks ago, we are implementing a new academic management tool and interface called Managebac, which was specifically designed for International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools.

First, some history. Five years ago, we began looking for an online tool that would give teachers the ability to enhance their curriculum planning process, and provide readily available information to students and parents. Parents, particularly in the Middle and High School, were asking for a better understanding of what their students were studying and how they were doing. Lastly, we needed to give students an online experience to better prepare them for what they would encounter in college.

Because of the complexity of the IB programs, however, finding a "plug and play" solution was impossible. Customization of traditional educational tools was not only cost prohibitive, but these systems were not capable of accomplishing what we needed. So, we went in-house and created the "Holt," which was Riverstone's solution using open source software.  Not perfect, but the best option at the time.

However, in parent surveys, and in teacher and student feedback to school administration, frustration with the Holt was heard loud and clear. Unfortunately, it was not user-friendly and ultimately, was not meeting our needs.  We began looking for a new system early last year; we discovered Managebac.

Throughout the spring, we explored Managebac and ultimately, felt that it would suit our needs. It is cost effective, cloud-based, IB-driven, and easy to use. Because it is not proprietary and already used by a large number of IB schools, the providers are responsible for updates and fixing problems.

Please note that we will be using Managebac differently throughout the school.

Elementary School Managebac Use

  • In the Elementary School, teachers are using Managebac as a planning tool and to ensure curriculum articulation from Preschool through Grade 5. Narrative and report cards will also be generated from the system.
  • At this time, because Elementary students, along with teachers, maintain portfolios in the classroom that track developmental milestones and student achievements, our Elementary School parents will not be using Managebac.

Middle and High School Managebac Use

  • Middle and High School teachers are using Managebac for unit and curriculum planning, communicating assignments, assessing work, and giving grades.
  • Middle and High School students are using Managebac regularly in their classrooms for assignments, resources, and teacher feedback.
  • Middle and High School parents will be able to view their student's progress and curriculum for individual classes.

The entire school is using the attendance module.

We specifically wanted to make sure the implementation of Managebac was as successful as possible for everyone which is why we have been proceeding thoughtfully. We will continue to look for ways to expand the use of Managebac in the future.

Over the next month, we will be rolling out access for Middle and High School parents. We will plan information sessions, have people available to answer questions, and help parents navigate and use this powerful IB tool.

We are very excited; this is another case in which the feedback we received from teachers, students, and parents was valued and listened to. Together, we continue to make progress.

Call for anything,

FALL CARNIVAL
Giant thanks all around to the Carnival Committee and leadership team of Betsy Bader-Hellstrom and Julie Worthington! It was a wonderfully fun evening for all ages and a great reflection of our community.

The Carnival is a gigantic undertaking that requires many people to make it the success that it is.

Thank you  to everyone who donated cakes, baked goods, or Street Taco ingredients! Thank you to the many students and parents who chipped in with set up, clean up, wristband and beverage sales, the games and rides, and more.

The smiles on everyone's faces said it all. A great evening!

The Carnival is an example of our Community and Service pillar coming to life!

NEW ADVENTURES
Please join us in wishing many wonderful adventures to Eleri Roberts, Middle School French teacher and Service Learning Coordinator, as she moves to Taipei, Taiwan at the end of final exams in December. She will be moving with her fiancé who has accepted a position there with Micron Technology.

Eleri started at Riverstone as a student in Grade 4 and was a member of our second graduating class in 2006. She attended Wellesly College and returned following graduation to teach at Riverstone in 2011. She has been instrumental in revitalizing our Middle School service program, led many outdoor trips, and is known for her gentle guidance of our students. We will miss her but wish her well on this next step in her journey!

We have started the search for a part-time French teacher and will keep you posted.
NOTE FROM OUR COUNSELOR

School has started and we are now into the busyness of Fall activities.  It is often hard for families to find a balance between schoolwork, after school activities, and family time.  Our stress as parents to fit everything in often spills over onto our children.  While the activities and the schoolwork are important, how we weave them into our lives is even more important.

Finding pockets of time to connect with our children is vital to their happiness, especially when it is busy.  Knowing that they are important and a priority helps children to feel loved, valued, trusted and connected.

Some easy suggestions for connecting with your children might be:

  • Turning off the music in the car and simply listening as they tell you about their day.
  • Having family dinners and dinnertime conversations where everyone tells a high point and/or a low point of their day. You could ask a random question like, "What super power would you most like to have?" Or, "Where would you travel to if you could go anywhere?"
  • Dedicating special one on one time with your child.  It does not need to be expensive or time consuming, but can be as easy as a walk around the block or a coffee date; almost any time spent alone with a parent is meaningful to a child or adolescent.

Sometimes the busyness or the pressure of "getting it all done" prevents us from taking the time to connect.  However, by taking the time to make these connections, we form the backdrop of our relationships with our children.

Shirley O'Neil is our school counselor who is available to students and parents on Friday afternoons. To schedule time with Shirley, please contact her at soneil@riverstoneschool.org. You may also email Lisa Armstrong or Robyn Olnes.

  MYP ASSESSMENT PARENT COFFEE
IB LogoUnderstanding better how your child's work in Grades 6-10 is being assessed will help parents during the Parent-Teacher Conferences in mid-October. The Middle Years Programme is quite a bit different from what many of us experienced growing up and, as a result, the expectations for students and feedback are correspondingly different.

Join us at a parent coffee, Middle Years Programme Student Assessment, on Thursday, October 10.

Andy Johnson, Dean of Faculty of the Secondary School, will share how our Middle School students receive informal and formal feedback from teachers, how that translates to grades on report cards, and more.

PLASTIC POLLUTION COLLECTING LIDS
Our Grade 8 students are continuing their efforts to raise awareness of plastic pollution and need your help collecting clean plastic lids! They will be creatively re-using the lids at a later time in their project (but that's a surprise).

Bring your clean yogurt lids, peanut butter lids or any other plastic lid that is between 1" and 5" in diameter. Leave them in the collection boxes at the Elementary School and Middle School front desks until Tuesday, October 8.

If you would like to learn more about the Grade 8 service project, ask a Grade 8 student or teacher Eleri Roberts.

FITONE TEAM
Riverstone's eight team members for Saturday's FitOne Races enjoyed beautiful fall weather for their 5Ks or 9Ks. At the same time, they earned Riverstone $500 for our athletic programs because we tied for second place in the Healthy Schools Cup for K-12 schools!

RIS FitOne Team members included Danae P-C., Laura, Gwen and Dennis D., Margit and Susanna H., Jenny C. and Lisa H. (captain).

Next year, let's aim for first place and the $1000 award!  Who says Otters can't run???

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: KAYAKING
During the last three weeks, Grade 9 students have been making the most of the vanishing warm weather by getting wet!  As part of their Outdoor PE class, they have been learning to maneuver hardshell kayaks, first on flat water at Quinn's Pond and then on moving water on the Lower Main Payette (the same section of river floated by Grades K-2 for their back to school rafting trips).

While many students were nervous the first time they pushed off the shore for the first time, their "fate" in their own hands, everyone was smiling on the river on Monday, even as it rained gently on the parade of colorful boats.  Forward, rudder and "bow draw" strokes have become more confident and crisp and a good handful of students have even been asking for "More!"  So, even as temps struggle to push past 60, the Kayaking Club, led by Mackenzie R and Karoline W (both Gr 11), is making sure that Riverstone Otters are on the water...right where they belong!

Outdoor Education is one of our school's Five Pillars that also include Academic Excellence, Community and Service, Leadership by Example and International Understanding.

Thanks to Lisa Fernandez for sharing photos!
OTTERCAM
We are introducing quick video snippets geared to give you a taste of what our students experience in their school day.

This week, we have two Grade 9 students explaining their creative approach to a Physics assignment by teacher Mark Anderson.

These are not scripted but quick impromptu explanations.

Please take a minute to watch this super short video. Enjoy!

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
Riverstone pulled out the win against Capital/Eagle last Thursday night. Even though the Otters had 11 players more than the other team, the Capital/Eagle team proved to be our toughest opponents thus far this season!

The Otters put away two goals in the first half; Luke W (Gr 9) slipping it in, followed by Quinn M (Gr 10) ripping a shot into the upper right corner of the goal. The beginning of the second half began by Capital/Eagle scoring their only goal of the game, giving the Otters a taste of what it feels like to be scored on for the first time all season! But Drew K (Gr 12) answered back quickly, followed by Alex M (Gr 9) who was assisted by Naomi C (Gr 9), her first assist of the season.

Many of the Riverstone players stepped up by playing unfamiliar positions which helped result in their third win. The Otters now have a record of 3-0-0.

The game schedule is on the
school calendarCome on out!

Thanks to coach Katie Stauffer for the great game reporting and coaching!

 USING LINKS IN THE NEWSLETTER
Besides sharing news, our newsletter is set up with links to webpages, downloadable information, and email addresses for questions.

Watch for names or words in bright blue with underline that indicate a link is embedded!
 COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES GOOGLE DOC
You have heard or read the phrase, "Sign up on the Community Opportunities Sheet" or "Sign up on the Google doc," and wondered, "What are they talking about?"

Well...a few years ago, we wanted to create a single place for parents to find Volunteer Opportunities at the school. The easiest mechanism was using a shared Google document! The benefits are that we can tailor every event or project on the document and parents can look and sign up to help at any time of the day, wherever they happen to be.

Using our Community Opportunities Sign Up Sheet has reduced emails and helped our event organizers immensely.

We include a link to our Community Opportunities Sign Up Sheet on the bottom of every newsletter; we also link to it any applicable newsletter segment. We currently have a separate sign up document for our Merci program too!

Check them out by clicking on the blue underlined links above!
