Visionary Leader Header

Lately, I have the feeling that something really good is about to happen.  What?  I just don't know.  It's a general feeling -- more of a vibe than an indicator of something I can see coming.  I guess this feeling can be called a positive anticipation of life itself! Despite the drenching rains that flooded Rock Creek and the playing fields and road in our neighborhood this week, despite the usual stresses of everyday life, something good is about to happen.  I can tell.

Have you ever noticed this kind of positive anticipation in yourself?  I hope so! My invitation for you this week is to begin to notice what's going well in your life and tune into the positive momentum you are already creating.

One thing I'm really looking forward to is conversing with Laura Murphy next week on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life.  One of the top civil rights activists in the nation's capitol, Laura is a passionate, deeply experienced visionary who understands the  legacy of our civil rights history -- and how to create real momentum today, despite the partisan blockades at play in the halls of government. Courageous, direct, insightful and wise, I know that Laura will help us understand civil rights in modern times and what remains to be done to create true equality.

Enjoy this spring weekend!

Very best,

Continuing the Fight for Civil Rights in the 21st Century featuring Laura Murphy of the ACLU

Growing up in Baltimore as the youngest child in a family prominent in the civil rights movement and local politics, Laura Murphy witnessed many of her family members run for election -- and lose. She decided at a young age that she would carry on their legacy by influencing lawmakers rather than run for office herself. Today, Laura directs the Washington office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU,) influencing Congress and the White Office on policy matters related to civil and human rights. As a leading lobbyist, Laura advances the civil rights' perspective on issues such as marriage equality, women's rights, voting rights, criminal justice and First Amendment issues. If you thought the struggle for civil rights lives only in history books, tune in on May 5 to learn how Laura Murphy continues to fight for Americans' liberties today.

Exploring the Human Genome to Save Lives
with National Geographic Explorer Pardis Sabeti

At one of the hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa that Pardis Sabeti partners with, around 3 to 5 staff members lost their lives every year from Ebola or Lassa fever due to contact with patients.Once a diagnostic test, created with the help of geneticists, was made available, infected staff members could be given a diagnosis quickly and benefit from a treatment that is most effective within the first few days of contracting the virus. Since the diagnostic test has been available at that hospital, not a single staff member has lost their life due to their dedication to their work.

Stories like this are the reason Pardis spends long hours....
