I'm so glad to be introducing you to Brenda Brock and her nourishing natural products in the same week that I'm attending our Georgetown Graduate Coaches Conference.  The conference theme this year is "Resilience: Coaching Leaders Through Challenging Times," and we have a record enrollment!

I have been invited to open the conference with a reflection about resilience. I find that, while at first pass, the topic seems like a rosy, glass-half-full theme, resilience is really about much more than bouncing back.  My talk will be about "the view from inside resilience" -- meaning that dark, quiet moment after you've bounced down and before you bounce back.  What can we learn from our struggles and how to we find the strength, courage and faith to survive them?

These ideas probably sound like the musings of a snow-bound working woman -- and they are!  But in examining resilience, I am reminded of the deep inner reserves that each of us has available.  Often, our transforming experiences are our hardest ones.  The view from inside resilience looks out onto the crossroads where one's old story meets up with a new way of seeing oneself and the possibilities that lie ahead.  At this crossroads, do you then retreat backwards to the familiar old struggle or bravely forge on, even when the future is uncertain?

Our radio show guest, Brenda Brock, has experienced entrepreneurial success as the direct result of trusting in her history, her heart and her vision.  Fortunately for us, her company's products nourish the spirit as well as our health and beauty. I am honored to feature this story of extraordinary business success from a woman on an inspiring mission.

Sincerely,

Avivah Wittenberg-Cox: A Vision of a Gender Balanced World
by Rachel Wold

On the March 3 Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life radio show, Avivah Wittenberg-Cox shook us all out of a standstill in a conversation ostensibly about women's leadership in 21st century companies by throwing the accepted terminology out of the window. "We need to reframe women's networks and leadership initiatives as balance networks and balance initiatives. It's crucial that men get involved too as both genders have much to gain from a balanced workplace," said Avivah, referring to gender balance rather than work/life balance. When asked about Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In book and accompanying movement, Avivah responded...

Lupita Nyong'o

In honor of International Women's Day this Saturday, we'd like to celebrate a woman we find inspiring: recent Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o. Lupita has garnered widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Patsey in the film 12 Years a Slave but we find her words and actions outside the big screen to be equally noteworthy. The acceptance speech Lupita gave for her Best Breakthrough Performance Award at Essence Magazine's Black Women in Hollywood luncheon highlighted her own struggle to accept her dark skin tone as beautiful and told the story of how she eventually learned the true meaning of beauty. We encourage you to click here  to watch her full remarks. We look forward to more of Lupita's talent and courageous words in the years to come.
