Visionary Leader Header

Over the years, I've worked with many organizations seeking to change the picture for women aspiring to leadership.  There are very good business reasons to do this -- besides the fact that it's the right thing to do!  As the number of women in the workplace has risen, the number at the top of organizations has stayed disturbingly small.  Why is this?

I really like how Sheryl Sandberg has urged us to "lean in" in order to make things happen, but women leaning in cannot shift the leadership paradigm alone.  Let's step back and take a systemic look at how our policies and processes are supporting the advancement of women -- or not.

Some of the keys to lasting organizational change are:
  1. Learning from the real voices of women (and other minorities) in your organization;
  2. Pinpointing the systemic issues that lead to inequities in compensation, promotion, sponsorship and opportunities; and hold women back; and
  3. Offering leadership development experiences that create community while addressing the common challenges of women everywhere -- and the unique culture and requirements of your organization. Ideally, these learning experiences will involve senior leadership (men and women).
On Monday, I expect my own ideas to be challenged, expanded and even debunked by my accomplished radio show guest, Avivah Wittenburg-Cox.  This conversation will put us on the frontier of understanding how to build gender-balanced organizations. Please join me and Avivah!

Best wishes for a relaxing weekend.

Sincerely,

A 21st Century Approach to Women's Leadership
 Initiatives with Avivah Wittenberg-Cox

Acknowledging the institutional and personal challenges women seeking to occupy the C-suite face, many organizations launch women's networks, mentoring partnerships and sponsorship programs to address the problem. Avivah Wittenberg-Cox thinks this is time and money ill spent, though she knows the need for action is real: gender imbalance in today's public and private sectors prevents organizations from tapping into both male and female halves of the talent pool and market. As CEO of the leading gender consultancy 20-first, Avivah works with progressive companies interested in building gender-balanced organizations and knows what it takes to create real institutional change. In a no-holds-barred discussion with Host Kate Ebner on March 3, Avivah will explain what what steps leaders can take to change their organizational culture and why more women "leaning in" isn't necessarily the answer. Don't miss this show with one of the world's leading experts on women's leadership.

Following a Family Vision Around the World
by Rachel Wold

  Tutoring children in a Nairobi slum, touring Croatia by bike, studying yoga in Nepal, marveling at ancient architecture in Egypt: this is a sampling of the amazing activities the Weinberg family (parents Kim and Larry and kids Alexa and Dillon) did on their 9-month trip around the world in 2010-11. Many families or individuals dream of taking a break from their daily routines to go on a grand adventure but few actually follow through and make the dream happen. So how do you plan for a trip like this, execute it, and ease back into your normal life?
