"We must cultivate the ability to hold tension in life-giving ways," writes Parker Palmer, the best-selling author, inspiring teacher and social activist.  What does he mean?

In his most recent book, Healing the Heart of Democracy, Parker invites us to learn to talk with each other "across our lines of differences."  He writes and speaks about the five habits of the heart that create conditions for the creativity and courage needed in a democracy.  Parker makes the case that the heart has always been the driver of politics, a source of power that may be harnessed for good or for evil -- and that by remembering and inviting the heart into politics and leadership, we can learn to hold our differences in a way that restores the "We" to democracy.

Please join Guest Host Chris Wahl and me for a conversation with this wise leader on Monday, January 27th. Parker will explain the habits of the heart and how attending to the heart can move us from broken-heartedness about the stalemates occurring in our government today to hopefulness and movement. An hour is just not long enough for all of the questions we have for Parker about leadership and about being human together!

Enjoy the weekend and please be with us on Monday for this important conversation.

Best wishes,

Parker Palmer: Healing the Heart of Democracy

With Chris Wahl and Kate Ebner

At a time when so many have lost faith in our political institutions, Parker Palmer, founder of the Center for Courage and Renewal, shows us how to expand our capacities to lead in the 21st century. Author of nine books, including three bestsellers - The Courage to Teach, Let Your Life Speak and A Hidden Wholeness - Palmer guides us to cultivate five habits of the heart that will help restore the hidden infrastructure of American politics. Join Guest Host Chris Wahl and Kate Ebner for a moving conversation about moving beyond "the politics of the brokenhearted" to restore democracy as "an opening to a new life for us and for our nation."  Recipient of 11 honorary doctorates, numerous national awards, including the William Rainey Harper Award, previously won by Elie Wiesel and Margaret Mead, Parker Palmer's life work has been to illuminate the possibilities inherent in life and call forth in us the courage to contribute to a better world.

Finding Real Happiness at Work through Meditation with Sharon Salzberg

 by Rachel Wold

According to Gallup, a full 70% of American workers are disengaged from their jobs. So what can we do to feel happier at work? Is it possible -- or even wise to try -- to be happy at work? The answers may surprise you.

This week, the esteemed meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg joined Kate on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life to talk about how mindfulness can help people gain greater happiness at work. Sharon's newly published book on the subject, Real Happiness at Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace grew out of her observation of the members of her online community: the majority of the challenges to their happiness were due to work.

Both the radio show and Sharon's book, Real Happiness at Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace illustrate Sharon's deep wisdom about meditation and contain useful strategies and exercises to help you achieve workplace happiness. Click here to listen to the radio show online or here to download the free iTunes podcast.
