Imagine landing your dream job and launching an innovative plan for change.  Then, imagine losing that job in a very public way. Ugh.

After just a short while in her government post, former GSA Administrator Martha Johnson found herself accountable for actions taken by others that grew out of a culture that pre-dated her leadership.  As a leader, what could she have done to stop what happened? In hindsight, what can she see now that wasn't clear then?

Smart, honest and candid, Martha Johnson is a leader who is committed to learning through her experiences, no matter how hard. One of the things that impresses me about Martha is her courage and willingness to look squarely at reality. Once away from the public eye, Martha turned her gaze inward to discover stunning truths about herself, about leading change and about the challenges of providing leadership for a large public institution with a seemingly intractable culture. On Monday, Martha will take us into her experience for a rare conversation about surviving a professional storm. Her perspective and wisdom are sure to add to ours. This show is one not to miss.

Sincerely,

Leading Through the Storm: Former GSA Administrator Martha Johnson's Story of Resilience

What should a leader to do after losing her prominent job as the result of a Washington, DC scandal? For Martha Johnson, the answer was not to disappear from public life or hide from the true story of mistakes made and lessons learned. For two years, Martha Johnson served as the Administrator of the General Services Administration for President Obama until a scandal over an internal training conference in Las Vegas compelled her to abandon the innovative changes she was pursuing in the agency and resign. Far from shrinking away from the public eye, Martha has shared the valuable leadership lessons she learned from the experience as well as her personal story in a best-selling book, On My Watch: Leadership, Innovation, & Personal Resilience. Join Host Kate Ebner and former GSA Administrator Martha Johnson on January 13th to hear a compelling leadership story of turmoil, accountability, and resilience.

Renewing Your Intentions with Bette and Kate:
Insights from a Friendship at the Start of a New Year

Leadership coaches Bette George and Kate Ebner know that a great way to start off the New Year thoughtfully is with a New Year's intention. The two friends and colleagues discussed what they've learned after a challenging year about upholding one's intentions during their 3rd annual New Year's radio show together on January 6.

As Bette and Kate reflected on their experience with their 2013 intentions, they were struck by how much harder they were to "live into" than they had expected. Bette's 2013 intention  to be "an island of sanity," inspired by the author and teacher Margaret Wheatley, became a challenge when her own life gave her ample opportunity to practice being calm and centered in the midst of difficulties. Kate's four-fold intention ended up partially realized -- and she admitted that she slipped into goal-setting rather than holding an intention.

So what did happen in 2013 to Kate and Bette and what did they learn about intentions?

Everything is Waiting for You

Your great mistake is to act the drama  as if you were alone. As if life  were a progressive and cunning crime  with no witness to the tiny hidden  transgressions. To feel abandoned is to deny  the intimacy of your surroundings. Surely,  even you, at times, have felt the grand array;  the swelling presence, and the chorus, crowding  out your solo voice You must note  the way the soap dish enables you,  or the window latch grants you freedom.  Alertness is the hidden discipline of familiarity.  The stairs are your mentor of things  to come, the doors have always been there  to frighten you and invite you,  and the tiny speaker in the phone  is your dream-ladder to divinity.

Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into  the conversation. The kettle is singing  even as it pours you a drink, the cooking pots  have left their arrogant aloofness and  seen the good in you at last. All the birds  and creatures of the world are unutterably  themselves. Everything is waiting for you.
