Visionary Leader Header

As I spoke with Cliff Miller of Mt. Vernon Farm this week in preparation for Monday's radio show, and he said something that arrested my attention.  "I came to this late, in my sixties, but I realize that I could not have built what I have on this farm any earlier in my life.  I wasn't ready for it." Here is a 72-year-old innovator who chuckles at himself when reflecting on his earlier views and actions. This blend of perspective, humility, humor, experience and wisdom make a learning experience of any conversation with Cliff.  A natural teacher and lifelong student of life, he is one of the most interesting people I've ever met.

So often, we are rushing forward, looking to the future for answers. I suspect that too often we miss the chance to learn from our own life stories, stories that reveal our misconceptions, our values and our purpose.  I wonder how the experiences I am having right now are preparing me for the future?  I hope someday I will look back and laugh like Cliff.

As you head into the weekend, consider reflecting on who you've been, where you're going, and what is present for you today.  Harvesting your own experience is just one idea inspired by my conversation with Cliff Miller.  His rare wisdom is something not to miss on Monday, November 18th.  Please join me.

Very best,

Sustaining the Family Farm:

Cliff Miller's Vision of Stewardship

In the foothills of the Shenandoahs in rural Rappahannock County, Virginia, Cliff Miller raises cows, sheep, pigs and chickens on the same land his ancestors farmed in the early days of the American republic.  As the sixth generation of his family to farm the acres where Mount Vernon Farm stands today in Sperryville, Cliff has a deep personal connection to the land, the farm and its future. This concern for the future and the past has inspired him to use sustainable, holistic methods of raising his land and animals, such as rotating his herds through different patches of land each day. If you want to learn the secrets behind the best-tasting meat in the region, listen to Cliff tell his story and outline his wise vision of stewardship that will preserve the land his forefathers gave him for many generations yet to come.

On Becoming a Leader

"Sometimes because of their background or the cultural norms they were raised with, there are students who never thought that leadership was going to be in the cards for them. What excites me is seeing the light come on as they realize "I can be a leader."

Nothing motivates me more than seeing someone who thought they didn't have it in them realize "I can do this."
