Pink-white blossoms in May. Rows of red apples in September. Spending the whole day outdoors on the land. Matching one's work to the changing seasons. The New England family farm is an icon of our American story, one we hold dear.
Years ago, I had the fun of living at Sunrise Orchards in Cornwall, Vermont. The farm was then under the management of Barney Hodges, Sr. who, with his partner, planted the original rows of trees decades earlier. My now-husband-then-boyfriend, Dave, and I lived in a wing of the Hodges' farmhouse in a small apartment with a view of the Green Mountains from the shower window. We loved life on the farm and imagined it for ourselves someday as we took long walks in the orchard through the seasons. Not long after, Barney, Jr. and his wife, Christiana, stepped up to help Barney, Sr. and eventually own and manage the farm. We were there to see those choices being made.
Now, years later, Sunrise Orchards has grown into a thriving operation that not only grows delicious apples, but also educates consumers about food. Chris and Barney have three children, named after apples and friends, and their enterprise is a remarkable story of vision, dawn-to-dark hard work, and a mission that links apples, family, community and education. Next week's radio show will be a chance for us to walk in their shoes for a moment and learn firsthand how these visionary partners have lived the dream.
Please join me for this special conversation.

Nebo Inspiration Corner
What the Nebo team is finding educational, provocative and inspirational this week Poetry Poetry fits the Inspiration Corner's criteria by managing to be educational, provocative and inspirational all at once. There's something liberating in savoring sounds, words and ideas free of the constrictions of conventional prose. We find reading poems to be enjoyable even if we don't quite "get" them- a healthy respite from logic and rational thinking.
If you'd like to get more poetry in your life, considering signing up for the Poem of the Day email, sent by the Poetry Foundation. The Best American Poetry Series is also a great place to start. Think you don't like poems? Alex Howe of Blunderbuss Magazine has a weekly column called "You, Too, Dislike It" for people "who think they don't like poetry."
