Who amongst us hasn't dreamed of a flexible work arrangement at one point or another in our careers? This topic has dominated the agenda of my coaching clients for year!  Working from home on Fridays, reduced hours, job sharing....there must be a way to make work and life work well together.

Over the past decade, I also have consulted with organizations across sectors, exploring how to retain talented women during the family-raising years of life.  I've seen "flexible work" become a competitive advantage for recruiting and retaining talent in some companies, yet in other organizations, this approach is still viewed with skepticism.

In the past five years, flexible work solutions have become imperatives for men as well as women as the Millennial generation progresses in the workforce.  Women and men seek work solutions that reflect their shared responsibilities.  Flexible work is no longer exclusively the domain of working mothers.

Today, more companies than ever offer flexibility, but we still have a long way to go in understanding how these options can be optimized for both the individual and the organization.  My guest next Monday is one of the leading advocates of flexible work in the nation.  Kathleen Christiansen will help us grasp the potential of flexible work as a smart strategy for organizations -- and how to align employer and employee expectations so that everyone wins.  I know Kathleen will help us see how far we've come, how to think and talk about flexible work -- and where all of this is going in terms of the future of work.  Please do join me!

Very best,

Kathleen Christensen:

A Vision for a Flexible Workplace

What does work mean to you? For millions of Americans, it means spending your days at a computer in an office for a fixed number of hours, on a schedule you probably didn't set yourself. But what if it didn't have to be that way? The ways in which we work have been profoundly changed by the technological advancements of the past 30 years. Now it's possible for people to work at any time, anywhere, allowing meetings to happen seamlessly between colleagues in San Francisco and New York but also blurring the lines between professional and personal lives. Momentum is growing to change this, thanks to institutions and employers who are advocating for more flexibility in the workplace. Join Host Kate Ebner and Kathleen Christensen, Program Director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and a pioneer of workplace flexibility, to hear the business case for why flexible work arrangements are beneficial for both individuals and their employers.

Dr. Timothy Killeen of The Research Foundation for SUNY: An Ambitious Vision

A sign in Dr. Killeen's office reads, "Do both." Though a former boss told him to take it down, the President of the

Research Foundation for SUNY (RF) has kept the sign on his office walls for years as a reminder to himself and others to aim high. Dr. Killeen shared his far-reaching vision for the RF's impact in New York state and beyond with Kate Ebner on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life on October 14.

Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers on Assignment Exhibit

While visiting a client at the National Geographic Society this week, Kate stopped in to view the Women of Vision Exhibit that is going on now through March 9, 2014.  She was wowed by the beautiful and moving photographs of the 11 women whose work as photojournalists is featured in this exhibit. A short film features the perspectives of these visionary photographers and leaves the visitor with much to consider. If you're in downtown DC, take a lunchtime break and stop in!
