Visionary Leader Header

Did you see that moon last night? The Harvest Moon, large and bright, rose in our skies last night. This moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. Sometimes, a Harvest Moon turns orange, like a ripe pumpkin. It looks larger than other moons because of its narrow angle to the horizon.  The Harvest Moon means fall is hanging in the sky, here at last.

It's always a pleasure to work with school leaders at this time of year when energies are high and hallways decorated with autumn leaves and first art projects of the year. This week, we had a great time with a group of dedicated school heads who rolled up their sleeves to focus on bringing positive accountability that inspires results and growth to their faculty and staff. Our program about accountability invites people to let go of their negative associations of being held accountable.  We reframe accountability by showing the great benefits of holding oneself and others accountable -- and the sorry consequences of avoiding this aspect of leadership.

In this issue of the newsletter, you'll find a few tips on how to embrace the accountability conversation rather than avoid it.  I hope you find them helpful.

Have a relaxing weekend and do join me for a long-awaited conversation with the fascinating Robbin Phillips next Monday. Her perspective may be just what you need in order to make your priorities catch fire with others.

Sincerely,

Inspired Marketing: How to Ignite Movements with Robbin Phillips of Brains on Fire

Robbin Phillips

As Courageous President and co-founder of the word-of-mouth marketing and identity firm Brains on Fire, Robbin Phillips believes that every marketing problem is a people problem in disguise. The new world of marketing is much more personal. It's not about technology platforms or social media doodads-it's about real relationships with real people. Instead of focusing on how you can "use" your customers to grow your business, she strives to "connect" and "celebrate" with fans and prefers to conceptualize marketing as human beings drawing other human beings closer. A graphic designer turned creative marketer who helps organizations create, revitalize, protect and grow their brands, Robbin will share insights from her new book, The Passion Conversation with Host Kate Ebner on September 9. After meeting her, you'll see new possibilities for realizing your vision - and you'll never think of marketing in the same way again.

Finding Yourself by Finding Quiet: Reflections on Conversation with Karen Ely of A Woman's Way

Karen Ely is the founder and director of

A Woman's Way, a premier women's retreat and workshop program located in Sedona, Arizona.  She is the author of four books and is an experienced facilitator with a commitment to assisting women in creating and living authentic lives of passion and joy. Karen joined Kate Ebner on the September 16 episode of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life.

Together, Karen and Kate explored how the message of Marianne Williamson's beloved poem "Our Greatest Fear" speaks to the experience of many women who were taught not to shine, lest they overshadow others. To those women, Karen would echo Williamson and say, "Your playing small does not serve the world...As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give permission to others to do the same."

So how can you shine?

India.Arie Performs "Just Do You" Live

After meeting with Kate this week, a longtime client heard this song by the R&B artist India.Arie on the radio on her drive home. Feeling that it was just the right message at the right time, she was inspired to send Kate the lyrics. We love the song and feel it echoes Karen Ely's message of dedicating time and space to take care of yourself. Enjoy!

5 Ways to Inspire Positive Accountability

Working on accountability in your organization? Here are some tips to put into practice:

  1. Accountability begins with you: model credibility and respect for your colleagues.
  2. Make clear, specific requests. This will make it easier on those around you to fulfill  -- and exceed -- your expectations.
  3. Separate the person from the situation when giving feedback.  Indicate that while you don't like the behavior or situation, you do like the person.
  4. Don't rely on hearsay or others' opinions to form your assessments of your staff. Seek evidence.
  5. Provide informal feedback in between scheduled accountability conversations, such as performance reviews, so there are no surprises (good or bad) when it comes time for the big conversation.
