September 10th is Poet Mary Oliver's birthday.  I hope she had a lovely day. Here at Nebo, we have been appreciating her all week long -- from sharing one of her poems with participants in our visioning web class to discussing her gift of poetry in our offices.  Mary's poems are marvelous to me, each one as unique and beautiful as a wild rose.  A former English major with a creative writing focus, I sometimes wonder why it took me years to grasp that poetry is meant to be shared aloud so that the language takes shape in the air and reaches the heart.  A poem, shared, is always a gift.  Here is video of Mary herself reading, among other poems, Wild Geese, which speaks to the season and our moment.

September is a month of unexpected gifts -- the bumper crop of pumpkins, acorn squash and tomatoes that grew out of the compost, the passion of the teachers at the inevitable back-to-school nights, the coolness of the evening air after a long summer, a conference call of senior leaders who laugh together most of the hour.  This week, I am grateful for what is all around, the everyday gifts.

You may have noticed that we've had some bumps in our radio show line up in the past two weeks.  Due to a family emergency, we rescheduled Karen Ely's show for Monday, September 16th.  I have a sense that this show will be like stopping to smell the roses, given Karen's commitment to providing amazing retreats and a place for personal reflection.  Please join me next Monday for this special conversation.

Sincerely,

What the Nebo team is finding educational, challenging and inspirational this week:

Ashes and Snow by Gregory Colbert
Ashes and Snow by Gregory Colbert
"Ashes and Snow" is a work of art and a traveling installation made up of photographic pieces, a one-hour film, two shorter film "haikus" and an epistolary novel by the artist Gregory Colbert. Describing the project, which has been in progress since 1992, Colbert says, "In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people saw themselves as part of nature and not outside of it." Watch the beautiful, almost mystical video above and learn more about the artist by visiting his website

Artist Jane Mount paints the spines of the most treasured books in history and asks friends and celebrities to identify their "ideal bookshelf." Her prints are beautiful symbols of the joy of reading. You can buy prints of some favorite collections or order a custom painting of your favorite books or those of a loved one- we can't think of a better gift for a bibliophile! Click here to visit the Ideal Bookshelf website.

Poem of the Week

If there were a designated "Nebo poet", it would probably be Mary Oliver. Her beautiful poems inspire us.  We frequently share them with our clients. Kate once heard Mary say that she writes poetry to remind people of our connection with the Earth and the beauty around us daily. We are celebrating Mary's 78th birthday this week with gratitude for her voice in the world.

When the Roses Speak, I Pay Attention
by Mary Oliver
Thirst

"As long as we are able to

be extravagant we will be

hugely and damply

extravagant.  Then we will drop

foil by foil to the ground.  This

is our unalterable task, joyfully."

And they went on, "Listen,

the heart-shackles are not as you think,

death, illness, pain,

unrequited hope, not loneliness, but

lassitude, rue, vainglory, fear, anxiety,

selfishness."

Their fragrance all the while rising

from their blind bodies, making me

spin with joy.
