Greetings!

Greetings!

As women, we often spend many of our hours attending to the needs of others. What about your own personal development? Do you invest some of your limited time in enhancing your capacity to be a credible, influential leader?

Unfortunately, many women have not internalized a leadership identity and thus, do not take purposeful steps towards their own development as leaders. "Women Rising: The Unseen Barriers," an article in this month's Harvard Business Review, shares research which shows "that for women, the subtle gender bias that persists in organizations and in society disrupts the learning cycle at the heart of becoming a leader."

Solutions, the authors write, "must support a woman's motivation to lead and also increase the likelihood that others will recognize and encourage her efforts-even when she doesn't look or behave like the current generation of senior executives." Having a safe place, like "a coaching relationship, a women's leadership program, a support group of peers-in which women can interpret these messages is critical to their leadership identity development" and an important part of the solution.

This month we share some tips on ways that you can be proactive in your own personal development as a leader. Our hope is that you will be inspired to commit to doing one thing this fall that will propel you forward.

We also hope that you will consider one of Nebo's online courses for women leaders. You'll find the details about these proven courses in this newsletter.

Finally, we recommend a book from our friend and fellow executive coach, Scott Eblin, titled The Next Level. In our mini book review, we share some of Scott's tips on what capabilities you need to develop in order to be competitive for advancement and succeed at that next level.

We appreciate you spreading the word about Nebo for Women and welcome your input on topics that are of interest to you. Enjoy the last bit of summer!

Warmest regards,

Why aren't more women in senior level jobs?

"Women Rising: The Unseen Barriers" by Herminia Ibarra, Robin Ely and Deborah Kolb, Harvard Business Review, September 2013

Despite efforts to improve gender diversity at the senior level of management in many companies, the results continue to be disappointing. "That's because they haven't addressed the fundamental identity shift involved in coming to see oneself, and to be seen by others, as a leader," the authors write. The article suggests three ways to overcome what they called second-generation gender bias: education about this subtle second-generation bias; safe settings for women to develop their leadership identity; and focus on purpose as leaders rather than in how they are perceived.

  12 Tips for Successful Women

Sharing ways that remarkable women do things differently, this article has some very practical advice for all of us. From letting go of perfection to creating "me" time, you most likely will find one idea that resonates with you and make a difference in how you spend your time and energy. Showing gratitude to those around you and having confidence in your own success are two of our favorites.

In this opinion piece, Wharton professor Adam Grant shares findings from several studies that men are more empathetic and generous when they have women in their lives, such as daughters, sisters and wives.  "The warming effect of women on men has important implications for education and work," argues Grant. Research has shown that companies that brought women onto their top management teams generated 1% more economic value (about $40 million). Not only could women leaders' direct actions enhance results, but perhaps also their general influence on the behavior of their male colleagues.

Bite-size Book Review

by Scott Eblin, Second Edition

Whether you are aiming for a promotion or a bigger scope in your current job, the expectations for results at that next level will be dramatically different. Many people fail - upwards of 40% -- when they finally get to that next level, because they fail to anticipate the new challenges and expectations. In other words, what worked in the old role is not what will necessarily work in the new one.

Planning for the transition to the next level is key and the author shares advice, tools and strategies that help you determine which behaviors no longer will serve you and what new ones you will need to develop and practice. By exploring key behaviors to pick up and let go of in each of three critical areas -- personal, team and organizational -- Eblin shows the reader how to enhance executive presence. Some of the behaviors to pick up include: regular renewal of energy and perspective, looking left and right as you lead, and team reliance.

The book contains cases studies to help the reader apply the learning to their own situation.
