Why aren't more women in senior level jobs?
" Women Rising: The Unseen Barriers" by Herminia Ibarra, Robin Ely and Deborah Kolb, Harvard Business Review, September 2013
Despite efforts to improve gender diversity at the senior level of management in many companies, the results continue to be disappointing. "That's because they haven't addressed the fundamental identity shift involved in coming to see oneself, and to be seen by others, as a leader," the authors write. The article suggests three ways to overcome what they called second-generation gender bias: education about this subtle second-generation bias; safe settings for women to develop their leadership identity; and focus on purpose as leaders rather than in how they are perceived.

Why Men Need Women
| Art by Rachel Sumpter |
In this opinion piece, Wharton professor Adam Grant shares findings from several studies that men are more empathetic and generous when they have women in their lives, such as daughters, sisters and wives. "The warming effect of women on men has important implications for education and work," argues Grant. Research has shown that companies that brought women onto their top management teams generated 1% more economic value (about $40 million). Not only could women leaders' direct actions enhance results, but perhaps also their general influence on the behavior of their male colleagues.
