Visionary Leader Header

Summer and vacation are synonymous, but did your vacation rejuvenate you? Probably not, if your vacation included lots of family, friends and the logistics of feeding and fun for a crowd.

From the very beginning in 2004, Nebo has offered very special retreat experiences. After almost a decade of hosting and participating in retreats, we've learned what makes a personal retreat very different from a vacation -- and so much more about how to ensure a truly revitalizing experience.

Next Monday, leadership coach and founder of the Georgetown coaching program, Chris Wahl will join me for a show dedicated to how and why to take yourself on a retreat.  Chris and I collaborate to provide retreats for senior leaders, groups of professional women and others in recent years. During Monday's show, we'll share what we've learned from hosting these experiences, plus offer a bit of insight from our own personal retreat experiences.

Wondering what retreats have to do with visionary leadership? We'll talk about that, too! This show will give you the "business case" for taking your own time away and design elements to help you craft an experience that gives you all the benefits of a good pause.

Have a great weekend!

Renewal Through Retreat:

How and Why to Take A Power Pause

Kate Ebner with Leadership Coach Chris Wahl

Hammock retreat

We are working harder, faster and longer than ever before.  Research shows that relentlessly "firing on all cylinders" without allowing time to renew can lead to  serious negative consequences professionally, personally and physically. Taking a personal retreat provides a chance to catch up with oneself and regain the perspective and energy needed for a healthy, successful and fulfilling life. Leadership coaches Chris Wahl and Kate Ebner lead retreats that inspire, recharge and nourish executives facing big challenges. Chris and Kate will share what they've learned about why retreats are important, what makes a great retreat, and even how to design one that's just right for you. Join us for an hour that will help you unplug, remove the noise, and give you just what you need.

Learn more about Chris and tune into the show Monday!

"Peerenting": The Unexpected Key to Understanding Millennials
by Rachel Wold

Viacom, whose brands include Nickelodeon, MTV and Paramount Studios,  makes it their business to cultivate "radical audience intimacy." That's the term Anne Hubert, Senior Vice President at Scratch, Viacom's creative consulting wing, uses to describe her company's deep knowledge of their consumers. Many of these consumers happen to be millennials, people born between 1981 and 2000, who comprise the largest generation in history.  By virtue of her innovative work at Scratch and access to mountains of new research about this rising generation, Anne is an expert on millennials.

Host Kate Ebner and I spoke with Anne on the August 5th episode of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life.  Anne addressed some of the persistent stories heard in the media about millennials in the workplace: that this generation is lazy, disloyal, too familiar with their superiors, et cetera. Anne spoke to these myths and shared a crucial factor in millennials' workplace behavior: peerenting.

Yes, you read that correctly. "Peerenting" describes the less hierarchical relationships that teens, twenty-somethings and those in their early thirties grew up with. Anne explains this shift: "Whereas in the 60's, family life centered on the parents, today children are at the center of the family universe, with parents orbiting around them, rearranging their schedules to get the kids to play dates and soccer practice."

This kid-centered organization affects the ways families spend money. Kids get a say in decisions ranging from what to have for dinner and what movie to watch all the way to where to go on vacation and even what house to buy. Taking into consideration that millennials have been raised in environments where their opinions matter and where they have been allowed to question authority, you can begin to understand why millennial employees expect that the CEO of their organization should listen to their brilliant ideas.

Anne emphasized that millennials are looking for "a competent co-conspirator" in a boss, one who shares their belief that they can contribute something important to the world and who can help them achieve success. While millennials know that have much to learn, they also enter the workforce believing that they have something to add from Day One. This belief has been reinforced not only by "peerenting" but also by experiences such as helping older colleagues with technology and social media, as they have grown up doing with their parents.

Anne emphasized that getting past the gimmicks of how the press portrays millennials is the key to understanding this generation and, therefore, engaging them.   Anne told us that most millennials believe there is a perfect job out there for them --  but only a shocking 25% know what that job is! Millennials are energized by a sense that they have the potential to change the world in a colossal way, but most are not exactly sure exactly how to go about it. Anne says that organizations that use a collaborative message- "Come learn and grow with us"- in their recruiting efforts, such as Nike, will reap the rewards of the creativity, passion and drive of the millennial generation.

For more on our discussion that ranged from which industries are prime for shaking up by millennials' consumer habits to why millennials actually have more job loyalty than we think, click here to listen to the full episode. You can also download the podcast for free via iTunes.

Auto-analytics is a method of using new self-tracking tools to help answer key professional (and personal) questions: How do I boost my productivity? Am I in the right career? How can I improve my work routines by altering my health habits, like sleep and exercise? This Harvard Business Review blog post contains some facts about happiness that surprised us, such as the revelation that distracting oneself from an unpleasant task by thinking of something happier actually reduces happiness versus staying concentrated on the unpleasant task. Try the short-assessment the article links to to see whether tracking your own happiness data might be a good fit for you.

The Happiness ProjectThe Happiness Project

Several members of the Nebo team have enjoyed reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. The book chronicles the author's year-long experiment to try to strategically and methodically increase her happiness. We found that her presentation of research on happiness, her resolutions like "Act the way I want to feel" and "Follow my curiosities", as well as the big revelations that occur to her throughout the year are thought-provoking and caused us to reexamine some of our preconceived notions of what makes us happy. Rubin offers many resources for starting a happiness project of your own on her website Why not give it a try?

One of our clients, Mike Janiga of MITRE, goes to the beach every summer with his family and friends and always wows us with photographs of the fantastic sand castles they build while on vacation. Here's this year's photo, shared with Mike's permission.  We hope this photo inspires you to get outside and enjoy the last few weeks of summer with your favorite summertime activity!
