"Put Together a Team": How Hard Can That Be? by Rachel Wold
Guest Host Chris Wahl and Alexander Caillet returned to Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life to tackle the subject of successful teams on July 29th. An expert with decades of experience in coaching leadership teams, Alexander Caillet dug deep into the topic, assessing both the advantages and challenges of using teams.
Alexander began by offering a definition of a team, adapted from The Wisdom of Teams by Katzenbach and Smith: "A team is a small group of people who work in collaboration and hold each other mutually accountable to achieve a common purpose and set of performance goals." He stressed how important it is for organizations to understand that teams require a start-up investment of both time and money -- and that performance may take a dip before the results of the teamwork start to emerge. Putting a team in place may also meet obstacles if the organizational culture or compensation structure is geared towards the success of individuals rather than a team approach. Obstacles aside, read on for the huge advantages created through teamwork:
Six Advantages of Teams
1. Competitiveness
Teams are more focused, have more drive, collaboration and more skill sets applying themselves to common problem than individuals alone.
2. Cost-efficiency
By bringing people to work together, teams can eliminiatefunctional silos.
3. More productive
When a team works well together, they can be much more effective than many people working alone.
4. More adaptive
Teams adapt quickly to new systems, environments, andcan be reformed or refocused if the need arises.
5. Stronger sense of community
As we spend more and more of our time at the workplaceand less of it in traditional communities like neighborhood associations or religious organizations, teams provide a strong social fabric and the opportunity for genuine
connections among colleagues.
6. Growth opportunities for team members
Today's employees place a premium on people who can expand their knowledge, show a proven ability to work with others, work across cultures and job functions, and contribute in a variety of ways, all opportunities offered by working on a team.
