Author and Hiker Tom Ryan: "How a dog made me more human" by Rachel Wold
Earlier this year , Tom Ryan and Atticus M. Finch received the Massachusetts School of Law Humanitarian Award. The funny thing was that only half of the pair receiving the award was human- Atticus is Tom's miniature schnauzer. But Tom maintains that Atticus deserved the honor as much as he: "It's fitting that he received a humanitarian award because he helped me to be more human."
This anecdote illustrates the heart of Tom and Atticus' tale. The dog, by offering Tom the chance to give compassion, love and caring to another being, ushered his owner (though Tom prefers the term "friend") through a dramatic transformation that altered the lens through which he viewed life. Before becoming Atticus' friend and roommate, Tom owned a newspaper in small town Massachusetts. His reporting focused heavily on corruption, scandal, abuses of power and other ugly aspects of local life. Eventually, after spending more and more of his days hiking the nearby White Mountains with Atticus, Tom came to a realization: he would rather live a life of simplicity and appreciate the many, many good things in life than focus on the negative. He sold his paper, moved permanently into the White Mountains. He also wrote the New York Times bestseller Following Atticus: Forty-eight High Peaks, One Little Dog and An Extraordinary Friendship, chronicling the personal transformation he underwent with Atticus at his side. His story has been featured on the Animal Planet Show "Dogs 101" and his popular blog continues to delight readers who are inspired by Tom, Atticus and now Will, an aging miniature schnauzer whose rescue deepened Tom's appreciation of compassion.
Tom Ryan joined Host Kate Ebner for a warm and frank discussion on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life this past Monday, July 8. Listen to the full episode to hear why he'll never be part of the vegan police, his thoughts on animal-human relationships and his simple advice for how you can change the world. This and every episode of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life is available for free on iTunes.
