Visionary Leader Header

When the radio show ended on Monday, I knew we had just scratched the surface of the insights and wisdom that the animal world offers us as leaders and as sentient beings living together in the world. The conversation with Ariana, Linda and Mel last week gave me so many new distinctions about leadership. I highly recommend the books that both Ariana and Linda have written.  Whether or not you love horses, you will find their insights fascinating and applicable to your life and the groups you are in -- from family to the workplace.

Our exploration of learning from animals continues!

Next week, on July 8, I can't wait to introduce you to Tom Ryan, author of Following Atticus, the remarkable true story of how he and his companion, a miniature schnauzer named Atticus M. Finch attempted to scale all 48 of New Hampshire's four thousand foot White Mountains twice in the dead of winter. Tom's story is one of love, loss and the resilience of human and animal spirit. It's a travelogue and memoir about finding one's way in the world, aided by a merry and stout-hearted canine companion.  When a friend and client, Sarah Laskin, gave me this book two years ago, I read it from cover to cover without stopping. I bet all of Tom's readers feel that they know him personally thanks to his gifts as a storyteller and humorous and wise voice.

I am dedicating next week's show to our own family dog, Nyx, and to dogs everywhere who not only serve as loyal and loving companions, but also teach us how to live -- and lead -- our lives.

Best wishes for a happy July 4th!

The Adventures of Tom and Atticus: A Journey of Discovery

Tom Ryan Atticus

Many dream of undertaking a quest into nature, but few actually pursue this idea. Middle-aged, overweight and acrophobic, newspaperman Tom Ryan and his miniature schnauzer, Atticus M. Finch, were an unlikely pair of mountaineers, but, as a tribute to a friend who died of cancer, they began a journey of endurance and self-discovery together. Tom followed his dog up the highest peaks of New Hampshire's White Mountains in the icy dead of winter, and they went on to attempt the 48 peaks of the White Mountains twice in one winter while raising money for charity. Since the publication of the book Following Atticus in 2011, thousands have been touched by Tom and Atticus' story of friendship, perseverance, love and self-discovery. At the heart of this story is an extraordinary relationship that leads to personal transformation. On July 8, join Host Kate Ebner and Tom Ryan as they discuss the ultimate journey each of us takes -- the journey of discovering your true self.

Learning a New Model of Leadership: Lessons from the Horse
by Rachel Wold

The three guests on the July 1 episode of Visionary Leader Extraordinary Life showed us some of the amazing ways that horses model authentic, present, non-predatory leadership. We had the opportunity to speak with them before the show and wanted to share more of their wisdom that wasn't covered on the show.

Arianna Strozzi"Humans have a narrow, somewhat twisted idea of what leadership is. We have this idea that leaders must be more than, better than, smarter than others and that in order for that to be so, there has to be those who are lesser than as well. Horses don't conceive of leadership in that way, the way they see it, each horse has a role to perform. These roles don't have to be static, either, but they do need to match the horse's skills for the particular situation. This translates to people as well. For a person to thrive, it's essential that they apply the best parts of themselves in the right place in the right time. When a person's not thriving, they're either not applying the best part of themselves or not in the right role."

-Ariana Strozzi, coach, equine-guided educator, author and owner of SkyHorse Ranch

"A lot of times we associate leadership with predatory metaphors. Horses are an example of a non-predatory power animal who will perform altruistic tasks to save weaker members of herd. If humans modeled leadership and power after horses, we would have a new form of power: a compassionate, courageous power that protects vulnerable herd members for the benefit of the entire group."

-Linda Khanov, author, speaker, riding instructor, horse trainer, and owner of Eponaquest Worldwide

"Being with a horse teaches people to be fully present. If you're distracted, the horse you're trying to work with will walk away or start leading you. The horses will only pay attention when we are present and committed to whatever we're doing with energy. This experience opens our eyes to how distracted most people are in their daily lives. Working with a horse also teaches people to be authentic and to own leadership roles. If you're tentative, the horse experiences that as confusion and won't follow your lead. They can sense whether we're really showing up and react most to the energy we project, not what we say or do."

-Mel Szarek, leadership coach and organizational consultant, regular participant in equine-guided development programs at Team Horse Sense

On changing conceptions of leadership:

"We used to be really hooked into leadership as a way of doing, and what we're seeing now is a shift toward understanding leadership as a way of being. The defining factor in leadership depends on your way of being, on your presence- that's what makes someone want to be with you and ultimately, to follow you.
