Recently, I taught professional athletes how to build a leadership vision. Using Nebo's vision process, we spent two days together, doing the groundwork of storytelling, assessing the present time and finally, visioning. It's no surprise that these students, already tested in the field of play, brought enormous conviction, courage and heart to their vision work. The results were truly inspiring. Yet, as I read their final papers, they write, almost without exception, about the importance of leading by example and of seeing oneself not as a solo contributor, but as part of a team. "It's about us, not me," wrote one athlete.
The success of the individual lives within the success of the team.
Teamwork is well known as a fundamental of leadership, yet there are too few high performing teams. At Georgetown's coaching program, students love the class taught by Alexander Caillet, a dynamic and innovator team coach and teacher who provides distinctions about teams that are truly eye-opening. A pioneer in the field of team coaching, Alexander has developed a highly effective approach to working with executive teams. Next week's show, guest hosted by my friend and colleague, Chris Wahl, creator of the GU coaching program, features Alexander Caillet for an inside look at the secrets of teams. Don't miss this one!

Creating High-Performing Teams with Leadership Coaches Chris Wahl and Alexander Caillet
We all know what teams are and have been a part of one at some point. But what makes an excellent team? Guest host and leadership coach Chris Wahl, MCC, welcomes fellow coach Alexander Caillet, a pioneer in the domain of team coaching, to explore this question. Organizations are increasingly turning to teams as a way of creating powerful synergies that produce extraordinary business results. Chris and Alexander will examine the balance of humanity with technical expertise, both of which are needed for teams to thrive, as well as what a leader and team coach can do to create sustained high performance over time. Alexander's experience includes working with large corporations, government agencies, nonprofits, and NGOs in over 30 countries and teaching as a faculty member of Georgetown's Leadership Coaching Program. Join these two experts, who often work together to design and deliver coach training for teams, to gain insights and ideas that will strengthen your work on any team.

Living in the Question: Exploring Paradox with Marc Lesser of Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute by Rachel Wold
Marc Lesser, CEO and co-founder of the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute, has spent his life grappling with a series of paradoxes. How can one be both a beginner and an expert? How can we accept what is while fighting for change? What he's discovered through years of Zen Buddhist study, executive coaching, teaching, and recently through writing his recent book Know Yourself, Forget Yourself, is that though two truths may be seemingly at odds, they often create a deeper, more complex truth when paired together than when considered separately.
In the June 17 episode of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life, Marc observed, "I don't like paradox. Who would? It's messy and confusing and that makes people uncomfortable. But clear truths are often shallow, one-sided and temporary. Paradox may be more truthful than clear truths because of its complexity." Host Kate Ebner agreed and noted that one of the most freeing things can be accepting these multiple conflicting truths and letting go of the need for one answer. Coaches often call this idea "living in the question," she pointed out.

Don't let your "busy-ness" crowd out mindfulness
"Being busy all the time can be a strategy for avoiding some of life's most important questions, like 'What do I really want? What are my goals? What is true right now?' "
