Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

I suppose it goes without saying that spring brings a burst of energy and new life. Yet, on city streets and walking in the park, I overhear people talking about the renewal of energy and the thankful end of the long winter season. These months of April, May and June often bustle with business travel, conference-going, and end-of-school year events. We're in that final push before the arrival of summer, which brings its own rhythms.

I believe in riding the wave. When energies are peaking, why not take full advantage of the creative urges and the ease of productivity? Spring is a perfect season for hatching new ventures, bringing big ideas into bloom, and reconnecting with people in your ever-expanding network.

On the other hand, I also notice that many people are deeply weary from the long winter. Soaking in the warm sunshine, we may be too quick to jump into forward motion without stopping to consider what our bodies, spirits, minds and hearts need for nourishment and renewal. This week, I am practicing pausing and "checking in" with myself. I invite you to do this, too. Give yourself what you really need and then you can spring back into the flow of May. You might try taking a short walk in the sunshine during the workday. Or going home early. Or perhaps just resting for half an hour.  Or maybe it's time for a long weekend or a stay-cation. Give yourself what you need before rushing out into spring traffic.

Next week, we're featuring the wisdom of Amy Friedman again on the radio show. As accomplished as she is, Amy's leadership vison of a fulfilling professional and personal life shows us all how to create a big enough picture for the whole of one's life -- not just work. She's an inspiration to me and many others, and her voice is a gift to all who are seeking a balanced perspective.

Very best,

Patrick Meier: Pioneering a 21st Century Profession --- and Saving Lives
by Rachel Wold

Humanitarianism and technology seem like two disparate and unconnected fields, but, as National Geographic Emerging Explorer Patrick Meier says, "what's increasingly needed are bridge points between those two communities and people who can speak the languages of both fields."

By working at the intersection of technology and humanitarianism, specifically with crisis mapping, Patrick is creating a new field that is saving lives.

Over the last decade, this political scientist-crisis mapper-digital humanitarian has worked tirelessly to create those necessary bridge points so humanitarian workers can leverage access to better information to save more lives.

The major impact of integrating digital technology into humanitarian work became apparent when FEMA officials referred to Patrick's live map of the situation after the Haitian earthquake as the most valuable tool at their disposal and begged him to continue his work on it.

According to Patrick, anyone who can read, has internet access, and can click a mouse can help when disaster strikes.

T

he concerned citizen 5,000 miles away can help process information by answering simple questions about social media content like, "Is this tweet about food, water, or medical supplies?" from a volunteer website to contribute data for maps that make a huge operational difference to agencies working on the ground to save lives. Whereas the maps used by humanitarian aid organizations used to be static, made of paper, and tacked on a tent or temporary operations center's wall, digital crisis maps are updated in real time to show the changing geography of the situation.

Patrick is hoping to wed humanitarian work and technology even further:  he's currently working with advanced computing specialists at the Qatar Computing Research Institute to develop artificial intelligence tools to analyze information in less than a second that would take volunteers hundreds of hours to process. Although Patrick says developing his first major crisis map was the hardest thing he's ever done in his life, he points out that now there's a new actor in the aftermath of a disaster that can make a huge difference in a way that wasn't possible before the internet. The advent of crisis mapping may indeed be one of the best examples of harnessing the power of the internet and its collective intelligence for the good of all.

"Trust me." Two words rarely said, but are implicit to the mentoring relationship.  In fact, trust is key to fostering all vital connections. Yet, we rarely think about it during the course of our day. We expect others to automatically find us trustworthy. We know our own motivations, values and integrity. Shouldn't others see that, too?  Not necessarily.

"The real story here is the human story. When we see news, our first reaction is: 'That's terrible, I wish it hadn't happened, I want to help.' Now, the outside observer has agency."

Patrick Meier outlines how you can make a difference in the wake of a disaster on the
