Greetings!

Greetings!

Women should nab their life partner in college.  Women should learn code.  Women should strive for the C-level jobs. This seems to be the year of women and "here's what you need to do to succeed as a leader."

In my work, I have the opportunity to get to know many remarkable women leaders -- entrepreneurs, executives, volunteers, educators, students and many more.  When I inquire about significant choices that these women have made along their career path, I am amazed at their stories of courage, resilience, creativity, optimism and vision.

But what really stands out is that each of their paths is unique.

And the choices they made at various points on that journey - some small and others life changing -- vary dramatically by person.  Whether it is getting an advanced degree, making a major career change, taking a year long sabbatical, going part-time, choosing to become a parent, launching a company or becoming a freelancer, these choices become the stepping stones along the path to creating a life and career of meaning and purpose.  Isn't that what we should be empowering all women to do?

In our May issue, we will introduce a new feature called "Five Questions" in which we will ask an accomplished, inspiring women leader to share her story with us.  We would love to hear if you have suggestions for the women leaders you'd like us to interview.

We can learn a great deal from other people's stories.  Their stories can give us new perspective or inspire us.  But we need to remember that it is their story, their choices and their life.  We each have the choice to create our own life and career in a way that is fulfilling and meaningful for us alone.

Warmest regards,

Are Your Leadership Skills Ready for 2020?

China Gorman, ChinaGorman.com

What skills will be required for leaders in 2020?  By the way, that's only six and a half years away!  The Institute For The Future published its research, "Future Work Skills 2020", predicting the skills which will be most in demand.

The top three are:

1. Sense-making - The ability to determine the deeper meaning or significance of what is being expressed.

2. Social Intelligence - The ability to connect to others in a deep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactions and desired interactions.

3. Novel & Adaptive Thinking - Proficiency at thinking and coming up with solutions and responses beyond that which is rote or rule-based.

Which of these skills can you build on to advance in your career?

What Women Executives Can Do to Pave the Way for More Women at the Top

Andrew Ross Sorkin, Dealbook, The New York Times

According to Irene Dorner, chief executive of HSBC, she looks back and sees now that by focusing on her own career, she missed an earlier opportunity to push harder to change the status quo in the male-dominated financial industry. She blames herself and other women in similar roles for the lack of women on Wall Street.
"The women at the top of organizations that I know will tell you that we think that we've made it because we were born the way we are and can play by these rules without feeling damaged by them," Ms. Dorner said. "Or, we've learned how to play by these rules and use them to our own advantage."
"I suspect that we were simply not very good role models," she added. "And there aren't enough of us to be visible so that people can work out how to do what we did."

Bite-size Book Review

Womenomics 1

by Claire Shipman and Katty Kay

Written by two savvy journalists, the subtitle of Womenomics is "1. Write your own rules for success  2. How to stop juggling and struggling and finally start living and working the way you really want." The book shares many stories from women who have redefined success in their own terms.  The authors build the economic case for more flexibility and creativity in the workplace to accommodate the changing needs of women.

While encouraging institutional change, they also share valuable economic data to support the reader in building her own case to achieve professional liberation.  This book advocates for all of us to slow down and ask if we could be living a more manageable, fulfilling life.  As the book says, "Just because, let's be honest, life is short, and who doesn't want more fulfillment?"
