Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

Yesterday was quite a busy day.  I just wasn't expecting it when the mailman brought me a handwritten note along with the usual bills and notices.  In a moment of quiet, a former student and friend, John, took time to write me a thank you note for a past experience. Written in a clear and unhurried hand, John's letter surprised me.  He said he was thinking about his work and reflecting on its blessings. He wanted to express his gratitude for the role I had played in encouraging him. Reading his generous words, I was reminded of the deep benefits of sitting quietly, pausing to appreciate one's life, and to express gratitude to others.  Receiving John's message, I felt a warm rush of gladness for his friendship and care, and he inspired me to think about those who have made a difference in my life.

In this spirit and "paying it forward", I'd like to thank YOU for reading this newsletter and being part of the Nebo adventure. We feel quite connected to you and all, who, like us, are endeavoring to bring a positive change through our work. When we see the number of "opens" each week after this newsletter goes out, for example, we are truly grateful that you take time to stay with us.

Today, March 8, is International Women's Day, a special day established in the early 1900's that is now celebrated around the world. In some countries, this day has a similar status as Mother's Day. I'm delighted to honor women leaders this month on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life radio show.  Next Monday, March 11, Jalaja Bonheim, founder of the Institute for Circlework, will be my guest. Through her remarkable work, Jalaja teaches leaders how to use circles to bring balance and peace to the world. She is training women internationally in circlework process, hosting dialogues that are healing and changing the world. This show is one I've really been looking forward to. Please join us

Very best,

Tips for Success from Booz Allen Executives Susan Penfield and Karen Dahut

Karen Dahut and Susan Penfield Last week, these two accomplished leaders shared their perspectives about how to fulfill your highest potential while thriving personally. Here are some of their secrets.

Work smarter, not harder. It is not about the number of hours you put in each day - it is about the quality of the work. Learn to take risks on others by surrounding yourself with really talented people and trust them to speak and work on your behalf.

Life is a journey you need to take at your own pace. Define your own life and career timeline. Don't be pressured by anyone else to fall into the 'normal' career trajectory. Taking time off to travel, to start a family, etc. might be just what you need to be motivated and a better person when you step back into the workforce. Keep that career vision, just be flexible with the timeline.

Maintain a strong peer network. Many people are so busy managing up and down, they let their peer networks atrophy.  Keep your peer networks strong as those connections may be the most important as you and your peers progress through the organization.

Find someone who encourages you. Remember you don't need to go it alone. Find colleagues, partners, mentors that can encourage you through the touch times.

Recognize the importance of feedback.Give it, take it, and incorporate it into your work. Accept feedback from all directions.

Be authentic. Be yourself. You will connect more easily with others and perform at your best when you are true to who you are. Capitalize on your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses through the development of others.

Take your rightful seat at the table. Make your voice and opinions heard by becoming a critical contributor to the conversation.

These seven ideas are just part of the wisdom imparted during the show by these proven leaders. To learn what they know about career success, especially in fields primarily led by men and to hear how vision plays a part, listen to the show .

One Executive's Personal Vision...

"My vision for myself is to lead a balanced life, which includes work. I love my firm, my job and my colleagues -- but it is not my life. I don't define myself by my title or role. When I leave this world, I hope that I leave it a better place than when I arrived. I have four priorities, of which family is number one. The other three priorities are work, community, and self - taking care of myself so that I will be here a long time in order to take care of my other priorities."
